all dogs can be snappy or can be great depends on training and socialization.

of the ones you listed jack russels will probably need the most exercise and the most space.

What are your other criteria in looking for a dog?

If you socialize well and train them that snapping is not acceptable then none of them. But remember Jack Russels are terriers and need lots of exercise and stimulation so that they don't get pent up energy which could cause frustration and therefore possible nipping and a short temper. The other two are bred for companionship and while they still need exercise and stimulation they don't need as much as a JRT.

Bichons are lovely dogs, but they are notoriously difficult to housebreak (as in "may never be reliably housebroken") and they're too small as puppies to be appropriate pets for little kids.

Jack Russells are very challenging to own, period. Jack Russels are terriers--that means they have pretty specific needs.

I dont know if I believe these things that people say about breeds.

I heard the same thing about Yorkies when I was getting one... I had basically resigned myself to the fact that he would never be housebroken... however, at 10 months old he is 100% reliable... has not had an accident in months (far ahead of those "number 2 smartest breed" sisters of his) and he is moved alot between two houses and is perfect in both... wee wee pad trained in one and outdoor trained in the other.

BUT: he lives up to his terrier roots... a bundle of energy ALWAYS.:D

It depends on the individual dogs, but as far as breed description goes...

I would say from most snappy to least.

chihuahua
jack russell
bichon frise....well I might be bias, because i own one and he' the friendliet dog I ever own, most bichons I met also were very friendly...even when he goes crazy and has his bichon blitz, he would mouth, but NEVER ever bites, not even as much close his mouth a little bit, its always wide open...he doesn't even mouth much either.

He NEVER had an accident either. Except one time he had an upset tummy from something he ate, and of course he couldn't control that. But even when we got him, I was expecting some accidents since he was new to my house, but not even one.

I do believe to some extend breed descripitons are true, not in all cases though. In case of my doxie she's somewhat stubborn, was hard to housetrain, but she's now housetrained, and she did dig holes, but isn't notorious hole digger though. She fix the description of her breed to the ''T''.

Most chihuahuas...small breeds in general like poms, yorkies, ect are snappy and yappy...from what I seen and people say...but there are exceptions.

M rat terrier was snappy and yappy.

ANY dog can be nippy if its not properly socilized...

i was raised with chis and never met a "snippy" one untill i met the many owned by paris hiltion wanna bes and people who buy them as fashion acessories...

id never met a mean bichon untill daycare and theres one here that bites whenever his neck is touched (hes not allowed in the pup tent)

of the 3 breeds it realy more dependind on what your looking for in a dog, the family and home situation and how much excersize your willing to give.

as a TENDENCY chihuahuas prefer to bond strong to one person, they can be very protective and they do NOT realize how tiny they are. they do not do well with kids simply because a well bred LARGE chihuahaus is only 6lbs full grown (you can pick up rescues and mixes in the "plus size range" that go 10-20lbs that would possibly make wonderfull family pets. however a NORMAL sized chihuahua is often much to small in structure to be truly safe around toddling babies, children who might not watch their feet or where they sit or kids who want a dog they can pick up and cuddle...a drop form a feer few feet can kill a chihuahua...

Bichons are generlaly sweet natured but can be stubborn...grooming can be an issue with the breed but there probbaly the middle ground of the 3 you mentioned.

JRTS and Parsons are a high energy high drive terrier breed, unless your going to be willing to channel that energy with lots of playtime, and training its not the correct breed, however if properly trained and given enough excersize and a task they can be absolutly wonderfull family dogs.

the key is, figure out what you want in a dog
figurou out how much TIME you have for the dog, this includes time for walking, time for training, groming ect
then form there you can start looking for a breed that will fit by finding GOOD breeders.

While JRT's are... wild at times, with proper socialization and training, they can be wonderful dogs. I wouldn't consider them challenging, and they don't need any real specific needs, just like most dogs, they need exercise, love, and something to do. I have a partial JRT, and she is the laziest dog I have ever met. But it's because she is outside playing or hunting with me or swimming... well, you get the point. A tired dog is a good dog, in my humble opinion.

Heh, if I had to generalize, I'd call ALL those breeds snappy!

But, honestly, it depends on the dog, its breeding, its background, etc. But if you want to avoid snappy, I'd look at things that are larger and are not terriers, just as a general statement.

What are your other criteria in looking for a dog?
A neighbour owns a 2yr old chihuaha who I often see showing signs of aggression towards her and her 2 young children. I brought the subject up with her recently and she told me "shes no more snappy than a jack russell or bichon!" (She knows I like those 2 breeds) And seemed very offended about what I said.

I was only thinking about her children, I dont think its right for that dog to be around them or any other small child. Last month she told me herself the vet went to examine the dog's teeth and she tried to attack him, he refused to do it and told her he has concerns about such a dog living with 2 small children.

I have yet to meet a snappy bichon, but I have only met well bred well socialized ones. There were all fabulous dogs.

Most chis I have met are either happy go lucky or timid. (likely due to bad breeding and raising) The timid ones snap to keep strangers away-hey it works

JRTs even well bred well raised ones will snap if they feel its warranted. They have NO qualms about letting you know if you have out stepped your boundries when it comes to them. This is why they are not good with kids, some breeds will tolerate a pulled ear or tail from a child (some JRTs will too, but not many) a JRT will generally 'correct' the child for doing so.

Out of your choices I would say Chihuahua, but it does depend on the individual dog and it's personality, not necessarily the breed.
(but then again, mostly all coon hounds can hunt- not just the individual but breed whole... but in case of most snappy, I say individual)

Chihuahuas are so small that they get spoiled and when dogs are spoiled they get snappy and prissy. :p

No breed is snapy. People are just stupid. Although with JRTs most people forget the T when they get them. So if you dont know what your doing I would say a JRT

Least snappy? probably the Bichon. Haven't met enough Chihuahuas to form a judgement about snappiness.

I have yet to meet a Jack Russell that didn't want to rip mine or my dogs head off.

The one poorly raised, without love, socialization, or knowledge of basic obedience. You pick. It can happen to any and every breed.
