Which dog breed(s) has the best characteristics to be a loving and reliable family dog but at the same time also an alert and courages guard dog? Or are above characteristics mutually exclusive?

What do you actually mean by "guard dog"?

Lucy is a love bug to the nth degree, but if anyone comes to the door or walks past our yard, she barks her head off. I don't think she'd ever attack someone, but she definitely lets us know there is someone there, which is enough of a deterrent to a thief in my opinion. I'm not sure if you're looking for more than that or not.

Mmm... I think Staffordshire Bull Terrier when I think great family dog. They are robust and love their families, I think children have a special place in their hearts. Guard dog... well I'm not so sure, they are predisposed to LOVE humans. But I do think if someone threatened the family, they wouldn't be just saying hi either.

ALOT of dogs have that personality. The list is endless. What else do you want in a pet?

I wouldn't expect a staffy to do anythign as a guard dog, I've met a lot and all of them have just loved everyone.
"OH HI! COME GET IN MY CAR, LOOK AT ALL MY STUFF. YOU LIKE GAMES? ME TO, LETS HUG!"

Harry is a cattle dog mix (but BYB ACD temperment through and through) as a guard dog he's highly reliable, not a single person is getting by him. As a family dog, he gives the best hugs ever, one of his favourite tricks is to lie on your chest with your whole throat in his mouth (he likes to "hold" you)
with family he's bombproof, with everyone else he's over reactive and suspicious.

Sophie was probably our best example of this sort of dog, she loved people, loved kids, loved puppies or any other baby animals. You could take her anywhere. But when she was young, every evening at dusk she'd do a lap of the perimetre of the houseyard, tail up, nose down, checkign everything was in order and then retire to the house for the night. She knew when to put herself between us and something dangerous (she once leapt between my sister and a dog that was lunging at her, she didn't even fight, the dog backed down right away)
Sophie was a total mix, she was meant to be boxer/bullmastiff but she looked more boxer/dane etc. She was bred from pig dog parents but never had that attitude.

I can't really give any advice without more explanation on your part. I would go so far as to say most/all guard dogs are loving and reliable with family. They protect and love those who they see as theirs.

Most importantly, what do you mean by a guard dog? A dog that will alert to intruders (watch dog)? A dog that will disarm an intruder? A dog that will attack an intruder?

Which dog will be a loving and loyal family member, alert and willing to do his best to protect his family?

The dog you bring into your home, treat with love and respect and kindness. :)
