I am getting a new puppy today and I'm just wondering where he should sleep? My dog sleeps at the end of my bed (on the floor) and usually gets up and goes and sleeps in the kitchen or living room in the night....he likes choices!! I dont think I want the puppy wandering around the house at night just yet so should I put him in my room and shut the door? This is what I did with my dog when he was a puppy. The problem is I want to keep the puppy in but my dog might get mad cause he cant go where he wants.

My dog that I have now was probably about a year old before he was allowed to have run of the house at night time so I dont know what to do....lol maybe i will let him loose in the house and spy on him at night :lol-sign:

IMO, crate training is the best thing in the world-- I honestly have no idea how people do without it.

So, my answer would be a crate :)

I'm not sure how to crate train....plus (I know this sounds bad) but I dont have the money to keep up-sizing on crates for him (i read something about not having the crate too big) Or would it work to buy the biggest possible one for him now? when hes 10 weeks? arg I dont know. Also, how do you think that would go over with my other one? Hes got run of the house, but he had to earn it by showing me that he would not potty in the house (comes to the side of my bed and kisses me if he wants out) and not chewing things at night time. I dont want him to feel like I am taking away the things he worked for by making him sleep in my room with the door shut again.

I'm thinking of showing him where his bed is going to be...(my dogs have their own bedroom) and maybe putting him in there and closing the door and checking on him every few hours. Is that a good idea?

I probably should have thought about this 2 months ago when I bought the puppy....not 2 hours before I leave to pick him up...ah live and learn I guess.

For our Great Pyrenees, we use my bedroom with the attached bath. She either sleeps on the bed with me, or goes and lays in the shower. I keep the door shut so shje can't wander, and has done great.

There are crates you can buy with partitions so that as the puppy get older you can make it bigger or you can just put a box to block one end of the crate and then remove it when your puppy grows.

I wouldn't be able to afford multiple crates as my dog grows up either so I went ahead and bought a crate that would fit his adult size. I didn't even need to make it smaller with boxes or anything, I guess it just never occured to him that he could go potty inside his crate. Some dogs are just easier to housetrain than others I suppose.

I wouldn't know how to begin to work with a puppy without a crate either.....both in pottying and destruction! I also bought the crate the size for the new dog. Mine came with a partition. Maybe all the newer ones do. But, I didn't use the partition either. Just being in a small-sized area seemed to work, and the partition that came with it seemed like something he might could get hung up on.

I highly suggest a crate since you have another dog who will be able to go into areas at times that the new puppy can't run free.

Is there anyway that you can gate off part of your bedroom ??? Even a closet . It's unfair to banish dog #1 and I can understand why you want the baby with you . My daughter's Golden puppy slept with them ....they knew when he was restless to let him out and he slept through the night after the 1st week .

I used crates also. The largest I could find, but I put some boxes in them to make them smaller until it wasn't needed anymore. It worked great with both dogs and I almost never had an accident in the crates.

Once they were housetrained I just started leaving the doors open.

Yeah I thought of that too, but theres not really any room to block off....My room is a fair size but theres a King sized bed in there....so room is tight  **** that wonderful comfy huge...bed.....zzzzzz haha!!

Im worried that he will chew my bed as well (its a wood sleigh bed with huge legs) so im worried he might want a midnight chew or something....and that would suck!! I think for tonight I am going to put the puppy in the dog bedroom and put a baby gate on the door so i can hear him if he cries and let the older saint go about his business....they arent friends enough to sleep together yet!

well I decided to put the puppies bed at the foot of the bed with the other dogs bed. And just wake up and check on them....I found them curled up snoozing together, it was so cute!! My older dog is okay with the door being shut...it helps it stay cooler in there anyway!!
