I have a Golden Retriever and he is 10 years old. When your dog is sick or getting older, and the vets put down your dog, where do they take your dog? Where do they go? I'm worried about my dog and I just dont know that answer!!!:( Please answer ASAP!!!!!!

I think it is usually up to the owner. Depending upon where you live, you may have the option to take your pet home to be buried, have the pet cremated and receive the ashes, or just have them cremated and not get the ashes. If you are concerned, I'd recommend asking your vet what they do now. It will be one less thing you have to think about when the time comes.

My dog was PTS at age ten. We brought him in on a big blanket and after they finished we wrapped him up in it and brought him home and buried him. you can also have them cremate them for you. If you don't want him I'm not sure what they do.

I have wondered the same thing.
I agree with Boston. It is good to talk about it with your vet before that time comes. You can ask questions, so that you know what your options are. Knowing the cost helps too. I have done cremation and burial, and it is so hard no matter what is decided. I could not bear for any of mine to go off somewhere, not knowing just what happened to them.

With Prudence our GP, they took care of the remains. Looking back, I should have taken the body back for burial, but at the time, was too upset to th ink about it.

Not to sound callus but when I worked at a vet clinic the animals that the owners didnt want to take after they passed were put in huge freezer until a company came to discard of them. I think they were cremated after they left the clinic.

I don't think it's legal in lots of places to bury your pets... although it's what we did with our cat. I know I'll pay for cremation next time, even if it's expensive, and I'll get the ashes and put them in the yard or something...

I've heard too many horror stories of dead animals being used for pet food :yikes:

I have a box full of ashes from all my pets. When my pets have passed on, my vet has a crematorium on his premises. I find getting my pet's ashes a kind of closure. I keep them nearby during my worst of the grieving period.

Same here except they weren't sent to be cremated. The city workers came and they were taken to a landfill. Sad isn't it? Especially when the vet I worked for assured folks we'd "take care of it". Since then, I have always had my furbabies cremated.

Hmmm... I am not so sure, what exactly did people think they where going to do? If you don't want to pay to cremate your own pet or bury them, well why should the vet or the tax payers even pick up that fee?
Its our responsibility as per owners to take care of our animals even after that passing.
