Dals at least here aren't terribly popular which is probably a good thing. I maybe see four or less a year unless I'm at a show.

Usually temperament is the reason cited for not owning a dal over some other breed - either the dog they met "was a mean dog" or "hyper".

The second reason I usually hear is "aren't they usually deaf?" or the litany of other health issues.

I have never seen a purebred dal in my life. Maggie, as far as I can tell, has a good bit of dal in her. I'm just wondering where that relative came from, because it sure wasn't around here!

I had a purebred dal a while back. FANTASTIC dog. Yes they are uncommon, which is likely a good thing for them. There are a fair amount of dogs in dal rescue, but they have a hard time because many crosses with no dal in them can have spots. Around here shelters like to call any white dog with spots a dal mix.

dals shed like no breed I have ever met lol. They are athletic dogs and can be guardy. Some day I might have one again. The shedding is off putting though.

I have only seen 2 purebred dalmatians. One had a horrible temperament and one LOVED everyone. Both had a host of health issues.

I do have a friend who uses dals as guide dogs.

I've run into a couple here and there but thankfully their popularity surge from the 101 Dalmatians movie has died down. They were turning into rather scary dogs for a while there.

You know, come to think of it, the ill-tempered dal I met was born shortly after 101 Dalmatians came out. The nice one a bit younger.

Thankfully they are not as popular as they where after the movie. They are not for everyone. They do have a fair amount of energy, they do shed like crazy(like as in 24/7/365 days a year). In some areas they are more popular than in others. I could not ever imagine NOT owning one.

I haven't seen any at all lately either

10 years ago (around the movie time) they were EVERYWHERE... my neighbor had one that was insane! (barking, pacing, biting..just a mess)

There were two were I used to live (same house) and there are two where I live now (also live together)...different ones though ;). Three black, one liver...all seemed to be nice enough dogs. The two here do some coaching work in addition to agility.

I know...eight. All of them but two (owned by the same owner) are CRAZY. Either HA issues, severe DA issues, or fearfulness/anxiety issues.

But the two that belong to a coworker are great. :) They're really neat dogs and I'm glad I was able to meet the ones that are a good breed example and not the BYB knock off versions.

There are a few in my neighbourhood, but ya, they do seem rather rare now a days.

This is the kind of dal I want. Minimal shedding.

I've only met ONE purebred Dal, and that was a LONG time ago, before the movie came out. We must not have many around here. I don't even think I've seen them at shows.

I see one every day, as Xena is supposedly part Dal. Makes sense. She sheds 24/7/365, has loads of energy and loves everyone ;)

I'm *pretty sure* Maggie has dalmatian in her. I thought at first she was just labeled a dal mix at the shelter because of her spots, but every time I make a "what breed is she" thread, people say dal, on here and other forums. I dunno, what do you dal people think? ;) Her fur is very hard and course and "sticker" like. It sticks to EVERYTHING.

I see a fair share at the conformation shows (enough to make points), but I can't remember the last time I saw one "in real life".

She could have dal in her. But it wouldn't be one of the first guesses I would make. I had a dog that was (all of these were papered dogs, so we knew for sure, she was the product of two oops litters) 1/2 weim 1/4 bouv and 1/4 lab. She was a dead ringer for a black weim. AND very weim like so if someone dropped her off and said she had dal they might be right.

But from looking at pics I wouldn't have thought of it unless you mentioned it. it would be interesting to see her move, I find dals have a very light effortless trot.
