Lily is 14 months old. It is time to buy another bag of Innova puppy food. Is it time to go to the adult mix? She is 12 lbs., if that matters. I appreciate any replies.. Thanks...:)

I never did feed puppy food. I would assume it is supposed to be when the dog stops growing though.

At her age I'd at least start mixing in the adult food if not switch all together.

We don't feed puppy food at all anymore, but in the past when we did, we put them on adult food by the time they were 5 months. So yes, putting her on adult food now would be fine for her. :)

Not much experience here with small breeds, but I would think she is done growing by now and it would be fine to start switching over :)

I don't feed puppy food anymore, but when I did, I switched before Lily's age. She'll be fine if you switch now.

I have never fed puppy food. I'd say she'd be fine to switch now though. Most people switch before the first birthday.

As a breeder of small dogs, after they are weaned, 1/2 puppy 1/2 adult food.
High quality food is a must.
By the time pups are 3 month-4 months old, slowly switched to adult food.
I don't know one breeder of small dogs that raises or keeps their pups on puppy food. Safer to have the pups on a high quality adult food, because of the risks of the very high proteins in puppy foods, that effect growth plates and rapid growth which should be avoided.

Thank you very much for the replies. I guess I have kept her on puppy food for much too long, although it was only half puppy food... the other half was adult canned food. She is a really picky eater, though, so I am looking to try some other kind of foods for her anyway. Thanks again...

I like to stop the pup food at about 9-10 months

:)

I would stop all puppy food at around 10 months... As long as your dog is doing well with weight and health.

You have not hurt your dog ... all will be fine... Just go to the adult food.

I hope this has helped.

Best wishes - Marie from Alaska

I stopped at around 10 months also.

What is the difference between adult and puppy food anyway? More fat content? I've always wondered this.

^^ Marketing? Low qual puppy foods have less protien and fat than high qual adult foods. Many high end foods don't have puppy formulas, good food is good food. My pups got raw, and while we did go to kibble for a while, they are all back on raw.
