My puppy is 13 weeks old today and I'm not thrilled with our twice a day dog walkers. I really want to send him to doggie day care. Can anyone offer some advice as to what would be a good age to start sending him? Thanks.

I suggest when he gets all of his three booster shots. Its not really safe to set him up in a situation where all of these unknown dogs are coming in, possibly without all of their shots and having him ge the chance of catching something.

:) After that is seems good. Make sure its a reputable doggie day care!!!

I have heard of two dogs already that died in the care of a doggie day care at a Petcetera and another.

Oh wow, that sounds like a fairly nice place to go to! :)

i'd wait until your baby has had all her shots still. Person opinion :)

I'd still be worried about my puppy not being fully vaccinated and going there. Even though those dogs have had all their shots, they could still trapse in something and bring it in.. :)

Make sure he has all his shots.

I would also look to see if they have a quiet spot. He is so little and puppies do tire out. He might really exhaust himself unless he gets a break throughout the day. Puppies already have a lower resistance.

Just a thought.

I am taking my puppy to doggie day care. She is 6 months old and absolutely loves it. Before I started taking her they required that we go through an interview, which consisted of her interacting with 2 other dogs (one at a time). The lady who owns the place watched them carefully and she was pointing out to me how she (the puppy) was at first unsure of what to do, but then she started being more outgoing. I thought it was a great thing to do, and it really helped with my concerns. I was also relieved by the fact that all the dogs are being put through the same kind of screening. The owner told me that they had no problems turning dogs away, or telling the owners to stop bringing them.

Where I take her, they have had puppies starting as young as 10 weeks old - not that I would recommend taking them this young. They separate the dogs by size, so if the puppy is small they get to play with smaller dogs only.

They also don't recommend taking the dogs every day, unless you really have to (think Disneyland for kids every day, without any rest time :)). They are exhausted after a day there, and my puppy sleeps the whole time after I bring her home - however, she can't wait to go again the next time - as soon as we get out of the car, she pulls me to the entrance and can't wait to get in. :) Also, they do have nap time for about 3 hours in the middle of the day, where the dogs either go to individual crates (if they are used to them), or they go in a quiet room and they just hang out and rest/nap on the little furniture that is setup in there.

As you can probably tell, I love doggie day care, and the place I go to is just great. I hope you are as delighted with yours as I am with mine. Good luck - it's a tough decision when the puppy is this young, but if the personnel there is as involved as it is where my puppy goes, I think they will be able to advise you on when it's best to bring your puppy. :)
