Just wondering if there is an easy way to teach Roll over?

I have taught Diego how to sit, shake... but was thinking of trying the roll over command.

I am working on lay down now...but if I tap on the floor he just lays down real quick and starts nibbling on my hand..LOL we need to work on that..LOL ;)

get a treat and get him to lay down. Then take the treat and slowly take it around his back . His head should follow the treat and he'll have to roll over to follow it. If he just gets up and walks around to the treat you are either A) moving too fast B) are up too high with the treat or C) Diego has decided that this is not the trick for him :p :D No seriously though, that is how I taught my pup. To get him to respond to a hand signal after he has the trick down pretty well, use whatever hand signal you want to use (I make a circle with my pointer finger) say roll over (or whatever command you want to use...if you wanted him to roll over every time you said popsicle I guess you could say that :) ) and the old hand motion. After a few days phase out the old hand motion (going around his back with a treat) and he should respond to just the command and/or new signal. I hope this works.
p.s. I just got done reading about this stuff in roughly 50 books that I took out of the library after I brought my pup home and they all had different suggestions on how to do things...so yeah, I'm sort of a loser and this may or may not be the best answer to the question. hope it helps though! :D

I finally have Jake rolling over and it was done using Sunnypup's technique of having Jake lie down and then with treat in hand, brining it around and over his back. He had to roll over to follow it. Once he had the motion down and hearing me say 'roll over', I started with verbal commands and flipping my hand over. Right now he's responding to the verbal command but eventually, I want him to go with the hand signal so every time I tell him to roll over, it's accompanied by my hand signal.

To give you and idea of how long it could take, Jake stubbornly refused to roll over for 3 weeks. Finally, two nights ago he got it on the verbal command only...and I know he was being stubborn because he's learned harder things in much, much less time.

I like Andrew and Sunny Pup use the lay down and rotate routine lol. Pakak has been going through obedience training and I like adding cute ones like roll over.

Ginger really was never motivated by treats. so i always had to go the opposite route. i got her into the down position, and then "pushed" her completely over, at the same time i said the verbal cue i use for roll over "roll over". after doing this so many times, she began to get it. from there i didn't have to push her over as much, she began doing it on her own. happy trianing! :)

well I taught My dog Trigger roll over by getting him to lay down and make sure you have a treat in hand just push him over until he rolls and say roll over and once he rolled say good boy and hand him the treat. It may take awhile for him to get the jist of it but my dog learned it in 3 days not sure if it will work on other dogs though.
