We know you got a 3 month old retriever mix. You've told us in every one of your 15 posts. Maybe put it in your siggy if you feel it pertains that greatly to every thread.
If you want to send me pics I could even make you a simple banner thing to go in your signature. It would be a simple one made in paint or gimp, but if you don't have the resources or time to make one and want one I can give it a shot.
There are a few different types of bones. The kind you find in abundance at pet stores are rawhide. Many people don't like these and they are a choking hazard for enthusiastic chewers.
There also baked marrow bones and knuckle bones, many don't like these because baking or smoking can destroy nutrients, and it makes bones brittle. NEVER GIVE COOKED CHICKEN BONES.
The bones you get from a butcher, and the kind I like, are raw bones. These are usually marrow or longer bones.
Do you intend for your dog to chew the bones, or eat them? Because, if I say, give my dogs a marrow bone they will chew it and pick all the meat off, versus giving them a raw chicken leg they will actually eat the bone.
On a side note, are you training your dog the drop it or leave it command? I can honestly say that that is what I regret not training my dogs sooner (and they are still shotty reliability wise). A fun way to train puppies is using games to teach life-lessons.

In the beginning, try to "trade" by giving your pup a higher value item. If the dog associates dropping something with gaining something better, it could pay off big in real-world situations if your dog were to grab a cooked chicken thigh.
