In light of the thread about Brody being sick -- I'm wondering what everyone feeds for treats. I've heard some mention of "soup pot" bones -- what exactly are these?

I give the boys max mini bones as a regular treat. I also keep apples on hand for a special treat but I don't do this all the time.

All my dogs eat raw, as well as my cats. When Rah gets treats he either gets: 1) raw treats 2) bully sticks or 3) peanut butter filled bones.

"soup pot" bones are the same thing as marrow bones, and I get them for Sarama . . . they are much cheaper, as a rule, than the raw bones sold in pet stores, but basically the same thing.

Other than that: bully sticks, vanilla cow ears, porky jerky pumpers, petkind dried tripe, dried fish skins (forget which company), stuffed cow hooves, those pig skin and beef jerky twists, nylabone edible eucaylypus bones. I generally prefer mostly 'natural' chews, but I'll throw in some of the more manufactured ones if she takes a shine to them.

Kona doesn't really get chewies much anymore... she just grew out of them, for some reason. We get her a chewy (We get her Purina's Busy Bones )once a month now, to keep her choppers clean, but other than that she doesn't really chew much of anything anymore.

I know the busy bones are junk, but we aren't feeding them to her all the time, so she'll be ok :)

Other than that, she normally gets Milkbones. She LOVES her milkbones.

My guys get raw soup bones from the butcher as well as Bully Sticks now and then as well as stuffed kongs. Sometimes I might get them a cow hoof or something but OC is such a touch chewer since being switched to getting raw stuff that treats that should last at least a few minutes, disappear quickly. Thankfully he's not a gulper, just a fast eater LOL

Mine LOVE the merricks stuffed hooves, they get pigs ears, fish skins, bully sticks, rawhide (don't have any gulpers) and edible bones. I dont give many rec bones (the big bones) as Dekka broke a tooth on one. But they have enough other things to chew on I don't think they notice the lack of rec bones.

I give raw bones (from Whole Foods because I find the naturally raised cattle have thicker, heavier bones, less likely to crack or splinter). When I'm feeling enterprising, I get 5 lbs. of bones, take them home, scoop all the marrow out and then mix the marrow with whatever I've got laying around: Natural Balance food roll, peanut butter, yogurt, these new food rolls they've been selling at the grocery store, whatever is squishy. I then restuff and freeze the bones and reserve the rest of the filling mixture in some tupperware and as the dogs clean up the bones, I restuff them and stick them back in the freezer. I get a couple weeks worth of organic 100% natural dog chew toys for $10.00 that way.

For training treats, I usually go with either Zukes minis or Natural Balance food roll cut up. And cheeze whiz. They're big fans of cheez whiz.

Raw bones here! The dogs LOVE them and the benefits far outweigh the cons. It is a terrible thing that happened to Brody and I hope that he continues to get better and is home soon, but one of the number one causes for blockages are socks and we all still continue to wear those!

Sadie gets Beggin Strips, Iams dog biscuits and Kong treats. I used to give her rawhides, but we cut those out a while ago. She loves her beggin strips! She also snacks on people food.

raw bones from the butcher. they're long bones, so yes, there's a risk of breaking teeth, but the dogs can't eat them the way they can knuckle bones.

as far as biscuits, i usually feed ivd's hypoallergenic biscuits just because i can get them cheap from work. "grandma" gets milkbones.

He eats raw, so there is some chewing activity there. No rec bones for us though. He does have an ultra durable nylabone that he chews on sometimes. He doesn't use it as much since we switched to raw though.

As far as treats, I use Dr. Harvey's freeze dried green tripe, otherwise I just cook chicken, turkey, pork, etc and make my own treats.

My dogs have large Nylabones laying around the house at all times (and never had a problem), and they get various raw bones.

As far as actual treats go, usually nothing. Right now we have some Darford biscuits in the house, but that isn't the norm. For training I use either chicken, fish, or Natural Balance food roll (depending on what we're doing).

I give raw bones, raw chicken quarters as a super special treat and they share a "wolf" sized nylabone. I'll be getting a Galileo bone (Nylabone) when I can afford it.

My dogs get all sorts of raw meaty bones, because that's what their diet mostly consists of! I feed beef knuckle (soup) bones... but only once or twice a month, strictly for teeth cleaning purposes.

I think knuckle bones are fantastic for cleaning teefers, but should definitely be fed under strict supervision. I always watch my boys when they get knuckle bones, and always take away the actual bone, because a weight-bearing beef bone is NOT EDIBLE. Knuckle bones are the joints of cows, so they are covered with lots of meat, tissue, and cartilege. They're particularly great for cleaning teeth because of the way a dog has to eat them - they can safely scrape all of their teeth into the cartilege, and to remove the meat they also have to nibble & pull with their front teeth. Just to clarify what I consider a "knuckle bone", here's Gonzy with one:

I never feed femur bones or "marrow" bones... the one time I bought a package of marrow bones, Fozzie managed to get one temporarily stuck over his lower canines and scared the bejeezus out of me! Not only that, but I don't really understand the benefits. They are round, bare bones... filled with marrow. Yes, marrow is healthy, even though it's pretty fatty and does upset some dog's tummies. But there is very little actual scraping and teeth cleaning involved in licking out marrow, and your dog is much more likely to chip teeth, being that they are hard & bare.

I am totally afraid of bones now. I even have bully stick fear.:yikes: I was in the room with Brody when he was eating his bone. I was not looking at him I was on the computer. I was listening for crunching and I did not hear a crunch only scraping. This has me so freaked out that he ate that much bone and I did not know it. Hell if he wants a treat now I will go buy him chicken to boil or even a darn steak. I don't ever want to take the chance of putting him through this again. I threw out all the bones I had for him in the freezer.

I get raw bones from the butcher, and occasionlly a steak.
They love them!
One thing is that the boys sometimes steal it from each-other and they end up running around like maniacs trying to steal it back, they nearly ran over my daughter. But not my girls though, they're perfectly calm.
