Have you taught your dogs some cool tricks? It's interesting to read what tricks people's dogs have accomplished, so list them here. Also, list any weird phrases that your dog knows.

Harley -
  • When I say "Paw" he places his paw in my hand
  • He can hold his lead in his mouth and walk himself
  • He knows what the word 'gentle' means. So, if I give him a treat and he tries to snatch it off me I'll say "Gentle, Harley" and he'll take his treat gently from my hand

Abby -
(She has been really hard to train because she's a Chihuahua) but here are some strange phrases she knows:

  • She knows what "On the garden" means.. She'll go over to the garden to pee
  • When I say "Off my lap" Abby will jump off my lap onto the floor.
That's about it! :D

Out of my three, Colby knows the most. She knows....

  • Say Your Prayers (she rests her front paws on my arm, then sticks her head between my arms like she's praying.
  • Rollover (lays down and quickly flips over)
  • Sit Rollover (she sits, then slides herself around with her paws, she twirls herself around in a sitting position)
  • Dance (she stands up on her hind legs, puts her front paws on my arm and walks, she can do it without her paws on my arm, too)
  • Speak (barks at me for a treat)
  • Dig (she starts digging)
  • Stop (she stops where she is and waits for me)
  • Off (she needs to get off something, like me or a piece of furniture)
  • Eat (I point at a piece of food I want her to eat
  • Gentle (usually if she's really excited and I've got a yummy treat she wants I'll say it so she won't take the treat hard)

I am now teaching them all "left" and "right" so I can signal them in what direction they should go.

Sadie knows 'paw' She'll give one then I shake and say 'the other one' and she'll give the other one.

They both know the common commands, sit, stay, drop, come etc

Nora will do a trick: High five. I'll say high five with both my hands up and she will stand on her back legs and hold her fron paws to slap my hands. Its cute.
I also play Peek-A-Boo with her. I will hide under a blanket then lift it up and yell Peek-A-Boo and she'll go nuts. She will lay there with her head on the floor just waiting for me to fling the blanket and yell out "PEEK-A-BOO"

How do you teach off and gentle?
This is how I taught "off". Say the dog is on the couch, and you want him to get off. In a stern, serious voice, point at the floor and say, "_____ off!" If the dog doesn't get off, gently grab his collar and gently pull him off while saying, "______ off!" once the dog is off, reward.

I taught gentle by using a low, serious, and somewhat loud voice, "GENTLE!"

Bear knows what "no lick" means. He has a tendency to lick his front paws and then gets hot spots. So when we see him doing it and say "no lick" he immediately stops licking. Of course, he doesn't look very happy about it.

Out of my two dogs, Rosco knows speak, shake, both paws with respective hands, bang your dead(flips onto his back), if you pat your chest he jumps right up into your arms, basic commands sit, stay, lay down, he used to be really snappy when it came to giving him treats so instead of gentle I use "Easy" and he takes it very gently. Also I don't know if it's really a trick, but if you hold a treat high up in the air he jumps up and gets it, all four paws off ground.

Zander my puppy knows speak, sit, lay down, shake both paws with respective hands, I use "Wait" when going out of the door or getting out of the car, we are working on the stay...if you throw a small plush toy up in the air he jumps up and catches it in his mouth.

Does anyone have any good advice on training stay? I really want him to learn it because of course it's an important command, but I like to play hide and seek with him, but I can't get him to stay, so I have my boyfriend distract him when I go hide!

All of your pets know some pretty impressive tricks! :) It's inspiring me to teach Harley more tricks.

Harley knows some of the basics, like sit, stay and off.

Stay:
This is how I taught Harley to stay-
1. Get your dog to sit
2. While facing your dog, walk a few centimeters away from him , with a treat in your hand and keep saying "staaay" "staaaay".
3. If your dog gets up, get him to sit again, and walk away from him while saying your phrase (don't make the final distance between you too big).
4. When he stays sitting and you've reached your distance, wait a few seconds (and say "stay") and if your dog stays still for the amount of time (don't make it too long at first), call your dog over and praise him, and give him his treat.
5. If he comes over to you before you say "come", make him go back to the start and sit, and repeat the steps. You may have to decrease your distance or time you make your dog wait if he continues to come over to you before you ask him to.
6. You repeat the steps but make the distance between you and your dog larger each training session (and increase the amount of time you get your dog to wait, and gradually don't use treats anymore).

Anyway, that's how I taught it but I'm sure there are other ways. However, it's been quite effective because we can leave the front door open while someone goes outside, and his natural tendancy is to go outside and wander around, but if we say stay he'll just wait inside at the front door.

Gentle:
To teach Harley gentle, every time he tried to snatch the treat out of my hand, I would take it away (don't do this if you have an aggressive dog), and I'd say "No" (In my normal tone but a bit more stern, you might have to use a deeper voice), and then I would slowly give him the treat and say "gentle, Harley" and then he would slowly take the treat from my hand, then I would say "Good boy!!". Keep doing this until you just have to say gentle before you give your dog the treat and they should get the idea.

Harley is really funny sometimes when I tell him to be gentle! :p He takes the treat from my hand sooo slowly and carefully and he tries to be careful that his teeth don't touch my hand!

The only basic command Abby knows is sit! :D It took me quite a while to teach her (she only learnt it properly last year, and she's nearly 5 haha). Before that she would only half-sit, so her bum wasn't even touching the ground.

I'm not sure how I taught Abby to get off my lap, she just 'knows' what the phrase is. I guess if your dog is on your lap, pick them up and put them on the floor and while you're doing this say "off" (or another phrase) and praise them when they're off. If you do this each time you can then just say the phrase and they'll get off your lap.

I dont know if these are really 'tricks' but Tess knows all the basics (sit, down, stand, stay etc.)
'Speak' and if i say it in a whisper she will 'speak' quietly (its too cute!)
'Wait' (sometimes she walks to far ahead of me on hikes)
'Off' 'up' 'Out' 'Eat it' 'Dig' 'dead dog'
She knows 'left and 'right', 'look' (look at me) 'look up' 'look down'
'in my hand' (when we are playing fetch she will put the stick in my hand)
she also does the thing where you put a treat on her nose, tell her to wait, the say 'OK' and she'll snap it out of the air.
and the funniest one "TESS! OSCARS EATING YOUR FOOD!" it doesnt matter where she is (upstairs, outside etc.) if she is close enough to hear me yell this, she will run as fast as she can towards her food bowl and chase the cat away from her food! I just love how easy she is to train, and she never forgets anything, i guess the saying is true 'never teach a border collie something you dont want it to remember for the rest of its life) wow i didnt realize she knew so much stuff! im so proud of her :D :D

Ar 3 months, Chyna knows:
Sit, Paw, Down, Wait, Off, Go Get a Toy and Go Get your Bone. She learned Sit and Paw at 11 weeks. It's funny when she knows I have a treat and will do the sit, paw and down thing in sequence before I even tell her to do anything. :D She doesn't always DO what I tell her to do, but she does know what the words mean!

My Rex sits down automatically when he sees us coming to him with food. But he listens to our next commands.

And my Eikon just sits down automatically as well, but he knows the word too. =)

Well my kelpie May knows all the basics, sit, down, stay, heel.
She aslo knows weave, ie running between my legs as i walk. But by far the most impressive thing she does is say "hello". I swear to god it's true, took me three months to teach her, of course it doesn't sound like a human hello. It kind of goes, hurroooooo
but it is definetly hello. Next im going to teach her "i love you". That'll probably take all year!
