I am curious. I have 4 dogs and ways wondering. What happens when your beloved pet dies? What do you do. I have not had to face this situation yet. Do you call your vet? Pet cemetary? I would love to hear any comments about experiences you have had.

I've had a few die at home, but most have had to be PTS... All have been cremated and ashes were buried , then in later years knowing I would not have that property for life, I went to containers, from there I went to scattering and including them with my Mom's and Husband's cremation site.... some I even put where I will be... waiting for me. I do have a container here that have some ashes from all cats and dogs important in my life. So I quess in my last 40 years, I'd have to say I'm at peace where they are now, and await for the Rainbow Bridge.

as a kid living at home, I never had to deal with taking our senior dogs to that last trip to the vet. When I moved out tho and started getting multiple dogs, well I knew it was going to be my responsibility to do what was right for them.

I lost my first 2 gsd's within 6 months of each other. Both had to be euthanized and I just "knew" on my ride to the vets that this would be the end result :((..I don't know what's harder, knowing this was the last time I would be with them, or having them pass away at home. I know neither one suffered but I knew it was time to let them go.

I had them both cremated and they sit on my fireplace mantle under their pics. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do, and I know I'll have to do it again at some point, but it did help knowing they weren't suffering any longer.

I lost three dogs within a three month span. Robbie, a collie mix, died in his sleep at age eighteen (he was nearly nineteen) on Nov. 5th and we buried him near the front of the property by the fence line (he always loved to 'chase' the cars along the fence.)
Emily, my Rott mix, was only eight, when she died on Nov. 22nd. My neighbor checks on my dogs for me while I'm at work and Emily was fine in the morning and dead in her bed in the afternoon. My neighbor thought she was asleep until Emily didn't respond to her call. We think it was a heart attack and we buried her next to the house. She was my 'velcro' dog and always wanted to be wherever I was.
Patch, my beagle/terrier/? mix, almost made it to eighteen but I knew it was time. We took her to the vet on Jan. 23rd of this year, then took her home to bury her. We put her next to Emily, they were always constant companions.
This was their last vacation in NC (May 2005):

It's always so sad .... I just found out this morning that my elderly neighbor's dog died this week. She was his only and constant companion. She was fine that morning and then he found her dead. My heart is breaking for him. She was a small breed and was 13.... his tears were flowing. He is having her tested for the cause... he took very good care of her. His other dog lived to be 17 , so I know it was a shock. I can only think of his lonely evenings ..........RIP Cie "y" .... your Daddy loved you so.

When I was with the vet's offices we regularly had people bring in pets who had passed away. We would either have our service do a communal cremation or private depending on whether the owner wanted to keep the ashes or not.

People sometimes liked to put them in a special spot at home. One guy even put the ashes box in the package tray of his car because that's where the dog liked to be.

Some people bury at home but it isn't legal anywhere around here.

Any pet I have had threw my life so far have been burried on my parents property in Maine. My parents always thought it was important to have them close by so we could go sit out and remember or talk to them. I think it was great for me as a child growing up because even though were seperate, there was that place we could go to where we could feel close to them. It was a good thing for my youngest sister who was almost 5 when our family dog died about 2 years ago. We were all very close to Diamond and me & my brother Phillip stayed with Diamond while he was put to sleep. Horrible thing, but it brought me peace at the same time. Well my young sister had a really hard time dealing with it after it was threw, she wanted to see him because she didn't believe it. So my parents told her we were going to burry him in the back yard and whenever she wanted she could go out there to spend time remembering him. So we were all there, I am the oldest of 9 kids and my father burried him as we all watched on. It was so sad, but Irene really enjoys going out to "talk" with Diamond when she really misses him. Sorry, didn't mean to go on & on.
