So I posted a while back about a supposed "chi mix" down at a local shelter. Well we went back and that little girl was gone so we picked up her brother, who was if I recall, the runt of the litter.

Anyways we took him to the vet today and he thought he was probably a Shepperd mix and thought he could get to be 40 to 55 lbs WHOA. We were planning on no more than 25 lbs. Anyone else have any ideas based on the pics of him and of his sister?? We need to know ASAP so we can figure out whether we have to return him to the shelter :( as he'll be too much dog for us. Thanks for your help.

Weird...I can definately see the shepherd, but what's odd is that I can see where they called him a chihuahua. Could he be a shepherd/chi mix? (but I can't even imagine how that could happen!!) However, just from the size he looks to be in the picture, I think he's going to get bigger than 25 pounds

A guess at the weight of a dog, (doesn't always work, but did with my labs)

Take the dogs weight at 16 weeks and double it, = approx adult weight.

Shiloh was about 32 pounds at 16 weeks, adult weight approx 65 lbs.
Charlie was about 43 pounds at 16 weeks, adult weight approx 85 lbs.

Don't know if it works for all sizes of dogs, but it was pretty accurate with mine.
Julie.

If you go by Julie's formula, then the dog should only turn out to be 16-20 pounds...he looks like he fits into his paws pretty well already, so I don't think he'd get terribly huge. I have been wrong once or twice before though. :)

Definately has some gsd in it. At this age, it will be hard to distinguish, but the dog really looks like a gsd mix.

Happy Ending

Thanks to everyone for their input, we got a 2nd opinion from another vet who said he was actually probably 12 weeks and not 3-4 months. She also said he seemed to be a Chi/GSD/Chow mix. Chi face, GSD markins and a Chow tongue (black marks). We decided that he probably would be too big for what we were looking for but thankfully my parents who were looking for a dog as well fell in love with him as well. So I'm happy to report that little Raleigh has a wonderful new home and I'll still get to see him and play with him in the future (my parents live 20 mins from my house).

He looks just like my dog Verbena, that we were also told was a chihuahua mix. She's now 19 wks old and weighs 13 lbs. When she was 12 wks old she weighed 7.02 lbs. She isn't going to be much bigger according to the vet. About 25-30 lbs. I think your Raleigh will stay med size to small.

Definetely has Chi. Has a stature and build similar to a Chi. But then again, I see a lot of GSD. Anyway, congrats on finding a good home for a cute little pup!!
