We know he has Lab...........but what else? It has been suggested that has Pit in him. If he is a Pit/Lab, what are they like? We have 2 kids and all of our neighbors have dogs. I am wondering if he will still be as good with the family and other animals? And how big should I expect him to get?

He looks sweet.

We got him from a friend that found him under his truck (seemingly abandoned). Apparently he looked pretty emaciated and was VERY afraid when anyone would try to pet him. He still is now...in fact, he frequently urinates a little when we reach to pet him and has his tail between his legs most of the time.

Here are a few more pictures to help out with his identification and to show off his cuteness.

He's adorable! If people ask, I'd call him a pedigreed BBD (Basic Brown Dog).

I can see the possibility of pit, but I dunno.

I definitely see some pit in it. Don't worry though, all your hear about pitts is mostly spread out by people who don't know anything about dogs, pitts are very nice dogs, they just need to be well socialized when they are young (like all dogs). Definitely declare him as a lab mix though.

For the pee thing, look up submissive urination in the forum and you should get some advice on how to cure it.

Good luck, he's really cute :)

Except for the face, he looks just like my puppy. She is a beagle/lab/australian shepherd mix. I don't know if you can tell from the pics or not. She does not like to pose, she would rather stick her nose on the camera. The white on his chest and paws are just like Maya's markings. I have also seen a husky/beagle mix that looked just like Maya.

Actually a lot of dog mixes are mistaken for pit mixes... especially when the parents are un known. My dog is a supposed pit bull x dachshund cross but since i adopted him as an adult i have no idea if that's what he really is. He has similar behavioral traits to both, but then he also will stand and point towards game if he catches the scent but not the movement - far as i know that's neither a pitbull or dachshund trait!

I would wait until the pup is a little older before you start playing "what's my dog's breed?" game. He may change physically, and as his true personality comes out you might be able to match him better to different breed standards.

Also keep in mind, mixed breed dogs aren't just two pure breds mixed together - you may have a true heinz 57 there with 4 or more dog breeds going into him. His mother may have been labxbeagle, and the daddy boxerxcattle dog.
Who knows?

But do work on his socialization and obedience training, that will help build his trust and confidence in his new situation. He sounds like he has some fear issues - the urinating and tail tucking - and needs some love and kindness to boost him back up. Good Luck!

What an adorable puppy! LOVE the second pic on your second post. The "what breed/s could he be" game is fun. I'm sure you'll never know for sure, but it's a lot of fun to guess. Lots of fun to see what other people think, too. Good luck to you!

Today was great! It seems like he's starting to realize that he's supposed do his business outside (does the term "elimination" include both poo/pee?). I took him to the vet for his initial checkup and she said he's about 8 weeks old (and weighed 16lbs), a lab/pit mix, and a very smart dog. She also said that from the looks of his paws and overall physique, he'll be a pretty big and strong dog. She agreed that Purina is junk and recommended Science Diet. She found that he was a lot of worms (keep in mind, he was abandoned) and most likely malnourished. She wants us to keep food/water available at all times rather than feed him only during specific times of the day because of the worms and his malnourishment.

I took him to a "dog walk" today, which is a fenced in 3-4 acre wooded area...he played with a 16 week old pup and a full grown 50lb female dog. He had a GREAT time with them! When they first approached him, he kept his tail as far between his legs as it would go...then he gradually joined in the fun and was taking down the 16 week old and pinning him to the ground. The bigger female knocked him over a few times, but he jumped right back up and counter-attacked as best he could for his size.
;)

Everyone that sees him (including the vet and her techs) keeps telling us what a beautiful dog he is...I'll have to get a bunch more pics and post them up in the photo area.

He is a cutie. Glad he is getting more settled into the family.

You might want to check out the food section for a dog food that is better quality than science diet. Vets do push it, but it really isn't a great dog food.

Also try to keep your young puppy away from dog parks until he has had all of his required shots. Usually around 16 weeks old.

Ahh...I didn't know that, thanks for the advice.
:)

I have to take him back in a month for his next set of shots. He did really well at the vet...she even commented on his calm behavior.

Reminds me of an Austrian Pinscher! But those are EXTREMELY rare so it's unlikely there is any of that in the lil guy. :)
