not having a good enough selection for male dogs?

Ok, I know female dogs are fun to dress up or what have you (well, some people like to) but I'd like some nice looking collars for my dogs, preferably in their colors because we're weird like that and not spend too much money because I'm saving for Paco collars for them. :p :D

Now, why is that soooo much to ask?!?

Hmph.

Hehe you color code your dogs too. But I don't know, I have noticed that too. Of course Ivan is still on the same collar he had as a puppy and the next one will end up with one like it (only in girlie colors).

I was talking to ym friend Lindsay (who runs a collar company) about that, actually, having a boy dog and not wanting to outfit him in girlthings. She was saying that she has a heck of a time finding good man fabrics that would suit a collar well.

I concur!!! I always buy my friend's female dogs collars, because I never get much of a selection when I pick out boy collars.

Gonzo and Fozzie both have unisex collars on. The best that I find are usually general themes, like animals or patterns, and are a color that could work for either gender. Fozzie often gets called a girl... probably due to the shiney rhinestones on his collar. :p

You should start a manly collar company, Nikki!

I know! When we had Winston I could never find anything nice for him. They were all too girly. I bet it is hard to find a more masculine pattern though even for the companies.

We just ran into this when trying to find Nard a cute collar! I found about a dozen pink, light blue, etc collar that would look awesome on Summer, but barely anything manly enough for Nard. They did have one plaid but the color clashed with Nard's red coat so it didn't work.

The thing with leather is that if I am going to get a leather collar, it's going to be good quality, from a company that has ethical practices- such as Paco's Collars. :p :)

Gonzo: what is the link to the site that fozzie modeled collars from... If I remember correctly they were pretty inexpensive, and I think they had some manly collars...

I hear ya! My problem is I don't do "bling". All I want is a simple, "normal" colored collar. Oh yeah, and not too thick or wide. Seems like all the plain collars I find are too wide and/or double layered- both leather and nylon. Why is it that collar companies assume if your dog is over 10 pounds you need something that would hold a horse?

THIS is why I started making my own collars. LOL! True, I still have a fair amount of "girly" ones, but I do try really hard to find boyish or gender-neutral designs... So far, Morgan hasn't complained. :p

As someone said earlier, though, sometimes it IS really difficult! There is an obscene amount of fabrics/ribbons out there with little hearts, frilly bows, and pink swirls on them, but hardly anything with boats, trucks, and explosions. LOL!

Is there something in particular you are looking for? I can dig around and see if I can find something that fits. Even if you decide you don't want it, it will be a good exercise in finding more "manly" prints for my store. :D

PS: Thanks for the idea, Renee. ;)

I noticed that too. I looked for a new one at Petco for Victor but i was horrified by the price and the selection was boring. I want scotchlight on my dogs and the only ones they had were ugly. VIctor had a four leaf clover one that was printed on scotchlight that he wore for years from old navy but it wore out.

try finding one in 6-8 inches that isnt girly/frilly...
poor little jasper currently has a butchered nylon kitten collar cause i coudlnt find anythign small enough...same for the harness its impossible to find the h styeor roman harnesses around here now (all step in which tend to rub on cresties) particularly in manly colors...

heck...id settle on plain baby blue collar and harness at this point but cant even find that!

Cute Collars

Okay, I mostly lurk here anymore, so feel free to disregard. But I've found
k9closet.com to have a wonderful selection. I've seen quite alot for male dogs, and they're completely customizable. They also have a cat section.

I'd strongly recommend the smoothie collars/harnesses for cresties. They may be slightly think/heavy, but they are extremely soft inside and good on their skin.

Oh, I do not work for them. Lol, I'm just happy with my purchases from them.

Yeah, I have the same problem. So many collars just seem too girly.

Collar shopping for Zeus is a special pain. He's a good-sized dog, but has a very thin neck for his size (15.5-16 inches). So almost all the collars that fit him are too narrow, intended for smaller dogs. Ugh.
