Personally I only have my dog's name and my cellphone number on it. There is not much space on my dog tags to write much more. HOWEVER my dogs are microchipped and they have tags saying they are microchipped and if found please take them to a vet/space/animal shelter/rescue center to get scanned.

The sad reality though, is that most people don't microchip because it is expensive and the chances of people taking your dog to the vet to get scanned are slim when you have a pure breed, valuable dog such as a Rottweiler or say, a cute poodle or toy breed of sorts, and it doesn't have any tags.

So I was wondering, what do you consider important to put on a tag?

Both my malts are micro chipped. But, Name and contact number only on tags :)

the new one that is coming from fetching tags will have a tag line (description of pups) more for fun though. Again it will have pup name and contact number.

There are so many more reasons to not microchip, not just because it is expensive. Just because one person finds risks outweighing benefits, does not mean everybody does. What works for one person will not work for all.

Rosey's tags have always had her name, phone number and our address on them (just the house number and street)

Mine have dog's name, my phone #, my husband's phone # and our address. Mostly because if they were to ever get loose from the yard, this is a small town and if there's an address on the tag, a neighbor would bring the dog back. After returning SO many neighborhood dogs to their rightful owners because their tags had addresses, I saw the benefit of adding that piece of information to my own dogs' tags.

I generally just have name (dog's name) and phone number. For some reason it creeps me out to have my name or address on the tag.

One tag has our names (husband's and mine, not Caleb's), address and cell phone numbers, the other tag has AVID's phone number and Caleb's microchip number (the same info AVID puts on the little plastic tags they give out, only on a better tag).

Just her name and my cell phone number. We've moved often enough and travel with her so frequently that address seemed pointless.

My old tags for Auggie had my address on it. Now I just put name and phone number on them so I can keep using them after I move.

Now, that's what I get for not reading the entire thread before posting. :lol-sign: That is exactly why I have our address on Caleb's tags.

Like Jess pointed out, there are other reasons people don't do a chip. None of my guys have chips because after finding out that *none* of the shelters/HS in my town scan a dog when it comes in, I felt there was no need to chip my guys.

Lizzie and Blaze's tag has my name on it along with my cell phone number.

I just have his name and my cell phone number, and a few little phrase on the other side from Fetching Tags.

Don't see a purpose to have an address- I'm back and forth between two houses every week plus always on the go and traveling, so yeah. Just best to have my cell phone number.

I don't put that he's microchipped because I feel like that will deter people away from taking him to the vet if they know he's chipped and if someone wanted to keep him or stole him or something. I've also heard stories of people trying to get the chip out themselves... yikes, so yeah, I don't put that he's chipped. I do think the chip is worth it. I like the added layer of protection and don't really see a reason not to do it.

Rumor's doesn't have her name. Her says "If I'm alone, I'm lost." and has two phone numbers. She is microchipped, but doesn't wear a tag stating that.

I assumed Specsy was talking about the area around her - I know a lot of people here that don't microchip for similar reasons.

My dogs have their name and either one of both of our cell numbers on their tags. Both of the girls have collars with their names and my cell number on them. They jingle and drive me crazy when they wear their tags most of the time. I think their next tags will have our address on there as well since there's a good chance we'll be here for the next 5 or so years. I think Tipper has her Avid tag on in addition to her regular but I don't remember...she's the only one of ours that's microchipped.

Mine have their name, two phone numbers (home and cell), and our city/province. The Dobes are tattooed and Dance is microchipped (but does not wear that tag) as well.

Quinn's says:
QUINN
IF LOOSE I'M LOST
-home number-
-cell number-

I don't even see that it's necessary that her name's on there. I probably should have put "REWARD FOR RETURN" or something instead.

eta:
She also has a current rabies tag, which has the vet's info as well as a link to getmehome.com where she is registered, so if they were to enter her tag number on the website all our info (phone numbers, name, address) and a picture of her would come up. We found a loose BC the other day and while he had the same tag his owners didn't register him on the site, so instead of us being able to get him back in 15 minutes we had to keep him overnight until we could call the vet.

Chloe is currently tagless, because she keeps catch the loop on the carpet and ripping them out.

When she did have tags, she had her rabies and an ID tag with her name and our home number on it. Our other dogs have always just worn their rabies as their ID.

This is true, but those above reasons are the two greatest reasons I have heard amongst friends and family whom don't microchip...so I just listed those two.

Taqroy is correct as well, in my area this is common place. Also wanted to add that I am not saying you're a bad person if you don't microchip, what I am saying is, because microchips are NOT common although they are helpful, I would like to know what you put on your tags.

Renee you have an excellent idea. Rottweilers here get stolen as well that is why I mentioned that microchips are sometimes very useless, they are stolen for breeding purposes as they are high demand dogs and are too expensive to buy through reputable breeders etc. and EASY way to make money is selling Rottweiler puppies from an over bred bitch at a fraction of the price, just because you can do it over and over again.

I think the easier you make it for someone to return your dog the more likely you will get it back...however if someone is dishonest and will not give back your dog, then there is nothing that can be done unless you KNOW where your dog is. 2 of my dogs are not chipped, but will be done in October. I will be honest and say I chipped not because of getting lost or running away reasons but for the sake of having my dogs registered for competition and for the sake of if they get stolen, that is the only way I can solidly prove they are mine

ETA: I just swopped my dog's tags around. Their "permanent" wear collar now has their name/my number tag on and their "walking" collars have their: I am chipped please have me scanned at spca/shelter/etc. on. The reason I changed it around is 1) because I was getting annoyed with the clanking of the two tags 2) because the chances of them getting lose on a walk are much slimmer than when we are home because they are pretty reliable walkers and are ALWAYS on lead 3) because I wanted a tag on their walking collars for "just in case"

I'M MICROCHIPPED

the reason I decided to chip was because 1. our shelter does check for chips and 2. especially with popular breeds, we have had a FEW people come into the shelter saying "THAT'S MY LOST DOG!" and honestly.. the microchip is the only SOLID proof of who is the real owner
