What would the procedure be if something were to happen to someone and they require to be taken in an ambulance while they have their dog with them. Where would the dog go?

I saw a man slip and fall while walking his dog today and I saw him being taken in the ambulance and I'm not sure what happened to his dog?

I think they call animal control to pick it up until someone can pick it up for the owners, or the owner can get it.

maybe they still get the dog and put the dog in a separate car so it won't disturb the medical staff in the ambulance.

I've had this happen.

My sheltie was in our SUV with us. Mom, sister and I were driving on the freeway. Mom passed out while driving. Thankfully we got onto the side of the freeway safe and called for help. The dog was not aloud to come. I called a family friend to pick us and our dog up because it was a summer day and jesus! You cannot leave a dog let alone a Sheltie in a car on a hot summer day!

Animal Control has to be called to pick up the animal if they cannot get someone who knows you to do so.

Once upon a time ago I was arrested (was a wild girl once:lol-sign:) and for some reason I had my dog with me. The dog was welcome in the back of the police car. So maybe it's just they aren't aloud in certain emergency vehicles or depends on if the person wearing the uniform feels threatened by your dog.

I'm sure someone would make sure the dog was taken care of . I was rear ended ( just clipped ) when my Bubba was with me . We were both fine , but the drivers were more worried about Bubba than me !

I had five dogs with me and had to have an ambulance take me to the ER. I was completely incoherent, couldn't even tell them my name, let alone the name and contact info for someone nearby who could have picked up my dogs. Animal control had to take my dogs. I was able to get them the next day, and was very unhappy, because Tyr broke a canine while he was in the kennel. (*sorry ~ mini vent at the end*)

they have to call animal control to come get the dog or they will hand it off to someone else to be responsible for it until they can make further arrangements. I have never heard of any animal being transported in the back of an ambulance.

It dependson where you are & the situation. Many will call AC to come pick up the dog until a family member or friend can get there. However, the hospital where I used to work at has a small number of kennels that they can & will transport a pet to until a family member/friend arrives at the hospital to help.

In my friend's case, she had to be hospitalized while home alone with the cats. One was accidentally let outside and was run over (she only found out later when calling shelters b/c a kind person had picked the cat up and dropped his body off at the shelter and he had a collar on), and she had to make arrangements after surgery for her kitty left at home to be fed.

When I was a volunteer medic, we were not allowed to take animals in the truck. All we could do is call the police or animal control. In REAL life/death emergencies we would sometimes need to leave the animals tied up to a tree near the scene if we got there before the police did. This happened sometimes as it was rural area.

Its a bummer and I felt bad doing it, but you did what you had to do to keep the patient alive. The one time that sticks out most was this older lady was really hurt (broken arms and ribs with blood loss) in a single car accident. The whole ride to the hospital she was freaking out, not about her but about her dog. But in the end, it all worked out. :)

i see. i think the medic should use to cars for their operation. one is for humans and the other one is for pets. in case the person they will rescue has a pet with them. With this the possibilities of leaving the pet tied on that area will not happened.
