GSD mixes here. We don't usually have small dogs...most of them are large. That's probably why so many of them don't get adopted. Most people around here either want a purebred, or a small mixed breed.

Mostly pit bulls and labs here as well (I am not sure if the pit issue happened before or after the pit bull ban in ontario, but they are flooding the shelters)

Its very sad that these dogs end up in shelters. We just have to many breeders breeding dogs that are not only common, but also can have temperament and health issues due to no health testing being done on the parents.

I honestly frown on someone breeding labs when there are way to many already. Even a good breeder with all the registrations still have many dogs returned because families unfortunatly do not always place a high value on the breed beause of how common they are (and of course other issues as well) . At least a good breeder will take the dog back though, but I wonder how many people are to embarassed and drop the dog off at the shelter instead? No way to know unless you chip each dog.

Pitbulls, shepard mixes and lab mixes.
When I get calls for pet homes for my pups I refer them to a local shelter. I often take a few in a year to foster and place in homes. I never take in puppies though, too much risk.

The most common dogs in shelters around here are labs/mixes, shepherds/mixes, golden retreivers/mixes, and hounds, since its legal to use hounds to hunt deer in Central VA. Not many pitbulls because a lot of shelters kill them just because they are pits, even though there are no bans except in one county around here.

Pit bulls and pittie mixes. Second place would be labradors and lab mixes, followed by German shepherd mixes.

Labs. And any kind of lab mix.

Right now, out of 22 dogs, 10 of them are labs/lab mixes. Other than that there's usually just a variety of breeds.

Lab mixes and shepherd mixes mostly (like crazy overflowing with shep&lab mixes), and many pits.

It makes me sooo sad to see all the dogs on Petfinder that don't even have names and their pictures are all through chainlink fencing. Every dog deserves to have a life of being loved. I've become SO passionate about reputable breeding vs. backyard breeding. Bit some people refuse to learn. Sorry to get OT.

Everything from "designer" mixes (especially poodle mixes) to pitties.

Pits, rotties and labs are numerous, often Akitas are available too, but here in Southern California there are even a lot of smaller dogs in the shelters, predominantly Chihuahuas, Lhasas, Shih Tzu's and pugs/pug mixes.

I always say no matter what kind of dog someone is looking for, chances are high you'll find one in the L.A. area shelters. Rare breeds obviously excluded, but anything you can find in a freaking pet store, you'll find at the shelters.

If you go to this site and select "all shelters", "dog" and "all", you will get a good representation, even though it's only from the 6 L.A. county shelters and doesn't include dogs in the 6 city shelters and those of cities that operate their own shelters (e.g. Santa Monica) or the Humane Societies.

If anyone sees one they like and can arrange for transport, I'll be happy to go and bail 'em out!

Mostly large and/or high energy/intelligence dogs. At my shelter, you see quite a lot of Lab type dogs and herding breeds. i haven't seen many pits, though my friend got her pit bull pup from our shelter about 4 years ago.

Take a look at your local shelters and notice how many of the dogs are unaltered, both males and females.
I just took a quick at both our humane society and animal services and the percentage is staggering.
I wish that more people truly understood this "other" risk of leaving their dogs intact.
Most here are lab mixes, and other herding breed mixes.

Our shelter has a lot of Lab and Shepard mixes. Animal control also sees a ton of chow mixes. Oddly, we have been seeing ton of Shih Tzus this year. Most of them purebred.

Down here it's mostly Maltese and Mini Foxies. I think Maltese are the most dumped dog in Australia. There are a lot of designer mixes popping up though and ACDs & Kelpies have always been common in shelters here.

Our shelter

Most definitely Pit/pit mixes and Lab/lab mixes. When I was looking for a small dog I went in there multiple times and the dogs they considered 'small' were in the 25-40 lb range and I was looking for the 10-20lb range....
