What does your dog get to chew, and how often?

Just wondering what chazzer's give as chew toys and how often they get new stuff?

Frodo always has a Nylabone Gumabone to chew on, though he only chews it occasionally and never tries to break off hunks.

He gets a beef trachea once or twice a week, bison tail or bison tendon every week or so, and a 6" bully stick every two weeks or so. Outside chewies are turkey necks and pork hocks. His ultimate favorite chew is anything plastic that he can steal, like plastic bottle caps.

Frodo LOVES to chew, but unfortunately if he gets anything too hard (shank bones, antlers, etc) he will break teeth, so I am limited to softer chews, which are also more expensive so he doesn't get as many as I would like to give him

Juno has a bunch of Nylabones and other toys that she chews on, which are constantly available. I used to get her bully sticks and tracheas and various raw chicken parts to chew on, but I'm bad and its been many months since she's had anything like that. I blame it on the fact that I never need to go to the pet store... So I never think about that stuff.

I just have to be careful with her, because she chews her toys with the intention of eating them. And she has swallowed an entire 4" of bully stick whole, on more than one occasion.

Mine always have Nylabones and antlers (mostly antlers) available. All three dogs chew a couple times a day.

Occasionally they will get bully sticks, but I tend to limit those to special occasions since they are gone almost instantly.

Also they normally eat raw (last few months being an exception due to multiple moves) so technically they get to chew a lot of meals too.

Mine have nylabones, cow hooves, and marrow bones (the white bleached ones). They go through soft chews so quickly they only get them as a special treat or when I can find them on sale. Then I get cow tracheas and rawhides (the kind that crumbles).

My dogs have Nylabones of all sorts laying around the house (regular ones, knuckle ones, bumpy ones), they have three Hurleys which they love and can't seem to destroy thankfully, and I also regularly bring them home Elk Antlers from work which they think are just the best. And if I have a few days in a row off work, I also buy them raw bones (be they rib bones, marrow bones, etc.) to enjoy. But, with my dogs' tummies, there is always a risk of one or more getting diarrhea, so I don't give them those unless I'm home to watch them.

Frodo has recently decided that any canned or raw food is going to give him seriously nasty diarrhea, so we are trying kibble for a month or so and hopefully I can get him back to raw. He of course decided this right when I blew $30 on brushtail and unagi canned food and I have a freezer full of raw.

One of the reasons I started this thread was to maybe find some more options for chews that can satiate his need to chew that was previously being met with a lot of his raw meals.

Oy vey. Dogs are work, lol.

Question- I've seen tracheas at the pet store and always assumed they would be gone pretty quickly, how long do they last in your house compared to say, a bully stick?

As for Tucker, he has several chew toys like a hurley, nylabone, orka toys etc. But to him the point of chewing something is to destroy it, and if he feels he is not making any progress then there's no point in continuing. Thus he doesn't like most of his chew toys very much unless they slowly break apart. For example, his favorite toy ever was a nobbly wobbly, it lasted like 4 days or so. He'd break a small part off, play with that small part very enthusiastically (probably why the toy lasted as long as it did) and eventually chew some more. I thought the toy was awesome too because in addition to the dog chewing it you could play tug and fetch with it. I was sad when it died.

As for edible chew we like him to always have a bully stick, it's really the difference between chaos and sanity in our house. It gives him something to do when we're not entertaining him. Unfortunately buying a bully stick once a week is rather pricey. We also have an antler (the split kind) that he'll use if there isn't a bully stick in the house, but he doesn't like it as much. I want to get a non-split one because I don't think he really likes the "meaty" part of the antler, it's kind of sharp and used to get stuck in his teeth.

My two are raw fed, so they get an assortment of rmbs to chew. In addition there's usually some combination of antlers, himalayan chews, and nylabones laying around the house. Bear doesn't really care for anything but his ball, so it's very rare that you'd see him chewing on anything else.

I save bully sticks for class. Whenever I need Pig to lie down and be quite I'll give her one to work on. Since she only gets them in class I can whip one out and she'll (usually) chew on that even while a dog is 10ft away barking it's head off.

The only time I fed trachea, it was gone even faster than the bully sticks. And we have never had a bully stick last more than five minutes with Kim or Mira (Webster took 10 minutes once but I think he was distracted). Which is why I rarely bother with any of them...would rather fork over the same money for an antler or two that will at least have the decency to last a month :p

And yeah sorry about the raw situation, PWCorgi. Similar situation is why I switched to raw originally...Kim just ouldn't do well on any kibble I tried. Fortunately she seems to have gotten over it and did pretty well on kibble this year, no hives at all even during this late summer/early fall period allergies seem the worst.

Nylabones are always available here and chewed regularly. Antlers, Z-ridge Bones, and raw bones are given every few weeks to every few months depending on my mood. LOL

We've tried the yak milk chews, dehydrated sweet potato chews, nylabone edibles, and ray tails and all were chewed up too quickly for my taste so they no longer get them.

Jackson doesn't like Nylabones. I've tried to make them special, seem appealing, not leave one out all the time, etc... it doesn't matter. He doesn't like 'em. And the only one he DOES like are the gummy-kind, the FlexiChews, and those he chews big chunks off and I don't feel comfortable with it.

I buy bully sticks in bulk, so much cheaper. I get the 12" ones and they usually last him a good week. He will chew for about 30 minutes or so and then I try to pick it up until the next day, etc.

He's been into Kongs lately, surprisingly. I put some canned food in them and freeze it and he really seems to love that. It doesn't keep him busy terribly long, though, maybe 15 minutes max.

Ummm.... we started buying Himalayan Chews a while back but he's picky about them. He only chews them if it's the only thing to chew.

Neither of ours are chewers, but every once in a while I'll get them bully sticks... Which sit around for ages until I give up and give them to the neighbor's dog. LOL Doom likes Kongs once in a while, but that's pretty much as far as it goes.

I film them with canned food and then freeze them. So they're an edible Kong lol. And this seems to make them last about an hour with Juno.

She's raw fed and gets marrow bones and rawhides for recreational chewing.

They're the only thing that's affordable and durable enough to withstand her jaws. Nylabones get decimated and bully sticks/tracheas/himalayan chews are eaten as quickly as biscuits.

They have (plastic) Nylabones and various toys laying around the house. Jack doesn't chew them up, he just plays with them. Once in a while, Missy will get in a mood and grab a soft stuffed toy and tear it to shreds.

As for edible chews...I have about half a dozen bones (shanks, knuckles, kneecaps, etc) laying around the house that they can chew at their leisure. All were orginally smoked and covered with yummy stuff, but now they're pretty much clean. Once every two weeks or so, I'll hand out new bones and toss the oldest ones.

They both get bully sticks about once a week - Jack gets half of a really skinny bully stick (PWC - the Western Steer Sticks), and Missy gets half of a 12in. Occasionally I'll give Missy a trachea instead.

I was doing RMBs and raw recreational bones outside a bit more in the summer, but not since it's gotten colder, as Jack refuses to chew on anything outside, he only wants to bring it into the house.

They get Kongs 4-5 times a week - whenever we leave the house. I calculate those as part of their daily meals. I fill the Kongs with canned food, dehydrated/freeze dried food/treats, biscuits, whatever, and then freeze them.

Question- I've seen tracheas at the pet store and always assumed they would be gone pretty quickly, how long do they last in your house compared to say, a bully stick?
With Missy, a 12 inch bully stick (I try to get the thickest ones I can find) lasts her about two hours. A trachea (the large ones) lasts her around 15 minutes.

Frodo has recently decided that any canned or raw food is going to give him seriously nasty diarrhea, so we are trying kibble for a month or so and hopefully I can get him back to raw. Poor Frodo. :( What kibble are you doing?

Mine occasionally get raw beef bones... but only the boston terrier keeps chewing on it after the marrow is gone. Jolene and Ruger will chew on the Galileo bone occasionally.

We just fill kongs with ground beef here and freeze it. I occasionally give bully sticks to Zuma at work. They get turkey necks and quarters outside randomly to devour as well.

Quinn has an antler that she has access to 24/7 - I used to put it up sometimes but I'm too lazy now. She doesn't really do anything with it during the day but enjoys it at night when everyone is settled on the computer, in bed etc and she doesn't want to sleep yet.

She also had a couple of Kongs and a Huck ball kickin around but she didn't really do much with them and I don't know where they disappeared to.
