Buddy boy will give me puppy kisses. And i don't mean slurp slurp "love ya dad" I mean like a full on face bath. someone get me a towel, I'm dripping. we're talkin' 2, 3, 10 minutes of slurp slurp slurp. he'll cover my entire face, neck, cheeks, chin, eyes, forehead. he goes a while, makes himself comfy, lays down, shifts his weight, settles in for the long haul, puts one paw up on my shoulder (stay here, dad, don't move), and goes to town. sometimes he gets a bit too into it and pulls my beard hairs with his front teeth. He's never done this to anyone else, but does this to me all the time when we're laying down.

So... besides the idea that i have left-over dinner in my beard... what does this behavior mean?

(I don't mind it really, and the wife thinks it's absolutely hilarious. She's training him to do it on command now when she points to my face and says "buddy, you missed a spot"... so no need for pointers on making it stop... I'm just curious)

Ideas?

LOL Mit that is my baby boy. I think however this means in pack order you are the Alpha male and he the subordinate and he is just grooming you. I may be wrong but any who it show a heck of a lot of love.

Since this is a puppy I'd buy the submissive thing. However in some adult dogs forced grooming is actually a dominance action.

The groomee is not allowed to move or end the session. Intense long licking with frequent hard stares...you will know the difference. They "know" you don't like it but they think you should stand there and take it and if you don't some will restrain with a paw or even their mouths.

My Beagle Mom's do this sometimes to their pups and they learn very quickly to simply lay there til Mom gets bored and releases them, lol.

Like I said, two different things and you're the best judge of what is the intent...sounds like puppy behavior to me

I am the only one Baby does this to. when I come in the door from being gone, she jumps up with her paws on each shoulder, and sniffs me all over, before commencing the tongue bath. I am the only one she does this to. I think she l oves me.

Xena does this to me. I just figured it was because I'm made out of meat.

She also has this foot fetish. She will lick any and all bare feet. That slimy tongue between my toes just doesn't feel right :yikes:

It is soo funny. Buddy starts in and when he gets really relaxed will put his paws on his chest as if to say, don't move, I've got a great spot. Hee hee. It is absolutely hilarious.

It may be dominance, but hubby is laughing the whole time, as well as I am laughing and I think Buddy just eats it all up. Crazy kid.

I think it has more to do with a your alpha and I'm grooming you master, type thing.,

Oh and Buddy will be two soon. Not really "puppy" anymore.

Technical dog terms would probably label this as a submissive thing; I watched Sawyer get his face licked for 5 minutes at a time by one particular dog, who kept following him around and throwing himself in front of Sawyer to do it. Otherwise, I'd say you just taste good and some dogs just REALLY like licking.

I think they like the oils or salt on your face.

Belle does it to Brian all the time. Same with Beezer.... sometimes at the same time lol. They will lick me but I think they know I dont' like those really big 10 minute slobber fests. So I get little kisses right on the lips and I always pucker up lol.

But especially when Brian comes home from hockey even though he showers first.... they are all over his face.

Bax, I'm right there with you! I will sometimes allow a client's dog to give me a quick flick of the tongue on the underside of my chin, but otherwise I don't allow licking of any sort. At least by a dog. LOL!

My dogs eat poop whenever they can. They don't lick my face or my kids faces lol. None of mine are lickers tho...they prefer cuddling or tummy rubs.

After hockey all bets are off...Xerk loves to rub himself on the hockey bag, or the "still wet with sweat" equipment. And then I get attacked by the dog AND the cat.

The cat obsessively grooms me though...it can be quite painful.

huh. Yea its not a buddy-dominance thing. I can end it whenever I like. I think he just enjoys it. We settled that dominance thing a long while ago (some of you may recall) there is no question about whether buddy is below me in the pack or not.

It's funny, I really have to clamp my mouth shut to avoid getting a french tongue bath... darn tongues are slippery.

I've often figured it was an oil or salt thing. I prefer to think its lovins.

But knowing is always best, so I figured I'd ask..
