Due to Charlie's current bout with whipworms and hookworms, I am now looking at all the preventatives and I am so confused. Is there anything that protects against whipworms, hookworms, roundworms, heartworms, fleas and ticks? All of these are problems where I live and I'd like to be able to give him just ONE preventative but, so far as I can tell, there isn't one for everything. I don't like using any of these chemicals at all but what other options are there? What do you guys do?

This article is helpful. I prefer topicals (non-systemic) for ticks and fleas, so I use Frontline. For heartworm prevention, I use Heartgard Plus. Interceptor is safe for collie-type dogs and protects against all the worms, so I think that is your best bet. There is also a thread in this same section about herbal or natural alternatives to flea and tick prevention/infestation.

I have a couple of questions: how long can you really wait in between giving heartworm medication and is it really necessary to give a dewormer monthly? Some people opt to give only a heartworm preventative and then have their dogs' stool tested for worms every so often.

We use Sentinal. Our vet said it covered more worms than most.

"Sentinel Flavor Tabs are for use in dogs and puppies that weigh at least 2 lbs and are four weeks of age or older. Sentinel Flavor Tabs are used to prevent heartworm disease and to control adult hookworm infections. Sentinel Flavor Tabs are also used to remove and control adult roundworm and whipworm infections. Sentinel Flavor Tablets also contain the insect growth regulator, Lufenuron, which is used to control fleas by preventing the development of flea eggs. The medication does not kill adult fleas. "

I also use Interceptor. It will not protect against ticks, but it will "help prevent" fleas. Should take care of all the worm problems you have, though.

I don't think there is any heartworm medicine that will protect against all intestinal parasites............either brand leaves out one or another. We use Heartgard for heartworm and Orson still came down with a case of whipworms last fall.
Fleas/ticks are not an issue for us so we don't use anything for that.

The link Show Pug posted for wormer is a nice place to deal with. I visited their site last fall and filled out their free sample offer. They sent me enough "sample" to cure 2 big dogs of a case of worms :D
