Hi, I worked at PetLand for about 8 months, did research, complained my butt off, almost got fired, but had too much bad stuff to get laid off. I reported how things were being delt with. It's not a great thing...
It was my dream job, when the store opened here that all i wanted... to work at PetLand. Then I didnt know any better. All pet stores are usually the same. Sad to say. Well i got the job on January 17, 2006... yes my first job yay!!! NOT!!! It's sad how they keep the puppies in there, i always did my best to make sure it was clean, and that the puppies were bathed. Sometimes they would go for 3 months without being bathed, the ones that were not sold. The isolation place is a little closet with cages in there. They would bark and howl but you couldnt pay attention to them. From the kennel tech and manager... "When you walk by here just ignore them act like they're not here, but remember to hope they get better... remember MONEY." I hated that they werent taken to a vet!!! The kennel tech was a girl and guy no older than me (then 17) who didnt know jack about anything. The puppies would sometimes have huges balls on their necks becuase the injections were never given properly. I hated it. I know how and would offer to do it, but if the manager found out he would get pissed and tell me to "Go out there and talk to a customer, you are not going to make me any money in here!!!"... it was an everyday thing. My dad would tell me... this is the real world now... everything is about money to most ppl and now you see that. I would want to play with the puppies because they were so cage crazy, but would get in trouble... "Are you showing that puppy to a customer?!" "no" " Well then put it back in the cage and sell something, you're doing nothing good playing with it you need to sell it." And well blah blah blah, thats how it went. They DONT CARE AT ALLL!!! You all need to know that... and I'm not going to say dont buy your puppy from a pet store because then wut will happen to that puppy? I know wut will happen, it will live in that cage for 6 months go down in price every month and have bad paws and hips and socializtion, and then be sent back and put to sleep. Sigh. At least 5 different breeders were not really USDA breeders, i found that out, made lot of calls and research. Confronted the Owner of PetLand here, and he got upset and asked wut he needed to do for me... i said nothing... you are horrible and i left. Please ppl think about it, they stuff dead animals PUPPIES in freezers, feed the wrong size breed food to diff pups, dont know wut they're doing and etc. I know... i saw it. And well, i dont regret working there, because now i know and am wiser. Tell me what you all think... thanx---- If anyone i know from the petland i worked at is here... Good ridance to you and i dont give a #@&%...

I can't stand Petland... the couple of times that I've been in there have made me cry. No store should be allowed to sell puppies and kittens, it is horrible.

I hate how so many peoples' lives are based around convenience... they will not spend the time to adopt a dog, or research and buy a pup from a good breeder... they need to have the dog right NOW, so they buy a petstore pup.

I know a couple who bought a "yorkie" (he weighs 25lbs) from Petland 7 years ago... and he is having so many health problems now. He was one of the puppies that was in the store for a good 6 months, and his price tag went down to $200.

But yeah, puppy/kitten stores make me sick to my stomach :(

I absolutely can't stand Petland. It has to be the worst chain pet store there ever was. The ones near me constantly have sick, worm filled pups living in unsanitary conditions. Same with the kittens. Disgusting rabbit, ferret, and hamster cages. The only thing in the ones around me that is somewhat clean are the fish aquariums...and even then, they're not always in the best shape either. 98% of the employees know absolutely nothing about the animals they sell as far as nutrition, training, care, etc. goes. Their puppies (not sure about the other animals, as I'm a dog person) are waaay over priced. Who would ever (knowingly) pay $2000 for a sick, puppy mill pup? Their excuse for the high price is that they come with some vaccinations and will be altered...that's what I was told anyway. Besides the animals, their products are way over priced. $25.00 for a plain nylon collar when I could go to another store and get it for $7.00 (yes, it's a different brand but it looks and works just the same). Their food is outrageously expensive. They're selling Iams and Nutro for the same price that I can get my California Natural or Innova at a much better store. Petland is the most pathetic, disgusting pet store I've ever been in. They don't get any of my business, nor that of my family or friends...if the general public knew how awful it truly was, I'm sure Petland would be out of business entirely.

Hello Chul. I have some info I will send you privately, that will make you feel very good about not being in their employment anymore. (pending lawsuit one of my clients has over one dead puppy and 2nd with pnuemonia and giarrdia) There are also some articles I can post and will do this when I can get to my files. It's unfortunate your first introduction into the petcare industry was with them, but you are right, you are now "wiser" to the realities and I'll bet in the future, you are one of the many who try to do something these petstores.

I don't go near any pet store that sells puppies and kittens. I saw a documentary years ago about DOKTOR's pet stores, it was horrible and I know that they are all basically the same. The puppy farms, the neglect. I just can't look and I won't give them my business. I use a Pet Supplies Plus pet store near here, they only have rescues in there, sometimes work with animal organizations to help them adopt animals out. They do sell birds and fish though, but this store has a more private feel to it so I feel better about them.

We have several Petland stores in our city.....don't EVEN get me started.

They are the worst of the worst..bottom of the barrel..scum sucking..PUPPY/PET PIMPS on the planet. I have more sad, horrible, atrocious, stories about that disgusting company.....I could write a book.

I just don't understand why, with all we know today, they are still allowed to profit at the expense of helpless creatures.

I also think it's sick, but I'd rather see their puppies be put to sleep because they aren't sold than seeing them selling them and getting more puppies... Sad truth, but if people keep buying, they will just get more.

For them, it's just products.

the only pet store in my town is Pet Paradise, I don't think it's a chain but I could be wrong...seems more like a mom-and-pop place. They haven't ever sold puppies or kittens and I've always been glad of it, because every pet store I've ever been inside with pups and kittens for sale just made me want to cry.... TERRIBLE conditions for the poor puppies and kittens. That's a horrible story and I hope that people wise up and start getting their pets from shelters and good breeders and eliminate the demand for hugely over-priced, puppy mill dogs from pet stores. but I know not everyone does their research when they get a dog... I know I didn't really know much about wolf hybrids when I got my Moro (i.e. the debate over whether they are good pets, the problems with breeders etc.), but I definitely learned a lot very fast!! I'm happy to say she's a good wolfdog.
Pet Paradise does sell snakes, lizards, frogs and sometimes even tarantulas... along with ferrets, hamsters, mice, rabbits and occassionally exotic animals like chinchillas or sugar gliders. and they have some of the most beautiful saltwater fish aquariums! but I've never seen a dog or cat in there other than the owner's dog that hangs out in the store sometimes. I have a lot more respect for places like that, although I know the hamsters, ferrets etc. probably all come from mill-type operations like with the puppies. It's just more heartbreaking to me to see a dog in a place like that...can't really explain why. I think most of you guys know what I mean.

actually the AKC ws recently considering(actually they were going to do it!) promoting Petland, it ws basically a done deal, until the word got out and tons of dog fanciers wrote in, signed petitions etc, to STOP them from doing this. Within the last couple of weeks, akc issued a statement saying they weren't going to be "promoting" Petland after more consideration.

I was told that Petland puppies come mostly from Lambrier Kennels, Lambrier is a huge pharmacutical outfit, that sells animal supplies as well..

AKC is bad enough when it comes to 'money money money', but to promote a petstore chain , my gosh what were they even thinking?

Thank god the AKC didn't go through with the Petland promotion. There are so many people who will breed their pet quality dogs just because they are AKC registered.

The Hunte Corporation (puppy brokers, middlemen who supply the petstores with puppy mill dogs) is where Petland gets most of their puppies from. It is so awful.

The AKC really just makes me sick the more I hear of them. When I got Midas this was the exact words of the classified ad in the paper:
"AKC purebred yellow lab puppies -- ready to train. $75."
In this thread I talked about what kind of condition Midas was in when we got him...
http://www.chazhound.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36820

"ready to train"...pfff!! what a load of bull. ready to have about a zillion ticks pulled off him more like it. The lady gave us the AKC papers and all it had was her signature, she said 'you fill these out and send them in he will be a registered yellow lab then.' We threw the papers out. We don't really give a rat's *ss about papers, we just wanted a good dog.

Fortunately, Midas has been doing wonderfully...his skin is healing much faster than I thought it would! And even though he had terrible infection in his paws, he is playing and running around more and more all the time. And he's really smart and has already started to learn commands :) I feel bad for all the other dogs on that woman's property who were all just as covered in bugs as he was, though. Our vet's office helped us file a report against her.

I do like having dogs registered with the AKC... but papers mean nothing if the health conditions of the dog are horrible. Just because a dog is AKC registered does not mean that it is a perfect representation of the breed, nor is it in prime health.

Don't even get me started. I boycott all stores that sell puppies and kittens, but Petland is by far the worst of the ones I've seen.

If AKC had gone through with that, I'd have added them to my boycott list, even though my dogs are AKC-reg and would have to compete in other venues. I am horrified that the people in charge of the registry that supposedly promotes the well-being of the purebred dog would even consider supporting puppy mills.

Yea, I saw a number on the computer one day that had that name, The Hunte Corporation, and i looked into it. Its sad, they go to the "breeders" puppy mills etc. and other pet stores and get the puppies and bring them to PetLand. These puppies drive forever all across the country. A truck that was for the Hunte Corporation came in one time, and well only the kennel tech and the manager are supposed to go out and get the puppies. Well i was late on purpose that day so i could sneak in to the truck when they were inside signing papers, and it was soo sad. Puppies so tiny, 5 yorkies were crammed in a tiny cage, they pull them out with no care. Water is so hot. Smelly and gross. I've read that some of these puppies spend a whole week of their lives just driving... stuck in a cage driving just to get thrown into another cage... The Hunte Corporation works for the devil...
