We feed Jack Purina Pro Plan Puppy Chow --- Why? Because my parents fed their dogs that and they grew up just fine...I am wondering if there is something better I should be feeding my pup? Or should I wait to switch once he is off the puppy chow? The goomer was telling me all about the foods she sells...but she is trying to make a sale right?

I feed Sam Innova EVO! GREAT food! Purina isn't that healthy, I mean it's not bad for them, but it doesn't benefit them in anyway. I would go with Innova, Innova EVO, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack, Solid Gold, Canidae...i think there's more but I can't remember them right now..:p

I feed Hannah Innova Evo, but we are transitioning to raw. I'm still researching raw so haven't switched her completely to the raw diet yet (hopefully some day). All those foods that were mentioned were great foods. Here's the websites for some of those companies too naturapet.com (Innova products, they have a great food comparison guide), eaglepack.com (eaglepack products), and canidae.com (canidae products). I have fed all three brands but have noticed greater results with the Evo.

I feed my 2 a completly RAW diet..(no veggies no supplements like others though just raw meat and bones, organs ect.)..why? Because kibble is crap in my opinion, there are so many benifits to feeding a dog raw.. i will NEVER feed kibble again.. my dogs have never been healthier and i expect them to live a long, long life, free from health issues

Amen to that..lol..but my mom wont let me feed raw.. I really don't like kibble, but my mom thinks it's bad for them because 'they use to eat raw when they were wolves, but now there domesticated' I'm not even going to start arguing again..I'm lucky enough to feed EVO, I'm not going to push it..:p

Isnt this bad for the dogs?

I am NOT bashing, I swear, I know very little about doggy nutrition.

I had been intersted in feeding my dog a home cooked diet, because she HATES dog food. However, I always heard you had to have just the right mix of veggies, fruits, meats, and supplements.

Your saying it is okay to feed ONLY meat?

Thanks

the raw diet is extremly healthy for dogs and has so many benifits..no you are not feeding JUST raw meat, but raw meat AND bones..there are several treads about it if you search... Dogs are carnivores they do not need veggies, grains, corn ect..dogs are not built to digest grains, their diet should be high in protien and low in carbs..some people choose to add veggies and supplements, they are not needed IMO... here are a few links

No, even when feeding a raw diet, you can't just feed meat, or you will create a huge mineral imbalance. You will have to feed sufficient edible bone along with it.

Personally I feed a raw diet too, with some cooked items and table scraps added when they are available. I do almost all my cooking from scratch, so table scraps are healthy and not any kind of junk food.

As much as I'm an advocate for home prepared food, I believe that it is better not just to rely on guesswork, so I base my feeding plans on the nutrient recommendations of the NRC and supplement where needed.

My guys are on Eagle Pack.

Why are they on it? Because on Wellness, Roxy had dirrhea quite often and I was informed it was most likely because of the food. Since the switch, which was done cold turkey, they've both been doing great! Roxy is maintaing her lean, muscular build while Hades just keeps growing and growing and growing! ROFL

Plus they eat a lot of junk food

Tango eat's California Natural dry food, aswell as some CN canned or Innova canned. She eats that because she likes it (she hates most kibble), it's a high quality kibble, and she's doing very well on it. I'd prefer to feed raw, but that isn't possible at the moment for a few reasons, but I'm planning on switching to raw within the next year or so.

The other three eat Nutro because that is what my parents have always fed their dogs and have had great results with so that's what they'll continue to feed. They also like the price, which is roughly a dollar per pound here and they think what I pay is outrageous...and I agree with them there to an extent, but it lasts me a while so I don't mind. (They pay $45, for a 44lb bag, I pay $60, for a 36lb bag..).

Innova Adult (Green bag) because it's one of the top of the line kibbles and I just don't have the money to put into a totally raw diet yet. One 33 lb bag lasts me 2 months.

I just switched Virgo to Canidae from Innova because it's (hopefully) what she will be eating when she goes to my grandma's. The co-op that's very close to her house (she doesn't drive much anymore) carries that instead of Innova.

I won't discuss the nutritional issues of this food, as that has been done often enough in other threads, but I wanted to comment that the "cost effectiveness" isn't necessarily true either if you compare the daily feeding amount and how long a bag lasts to other, higher-quality foods.

In a nutshell: don't just look at the price tag on the bag:

Me too, I feed a variety of meats, bones, and organs as well as whole prey. I have never seen my dogs look so good.

And I agree that kibble is crap :p

Nana's on Natural Balance and Mimi's on Innova Adult.
Why? Nana's super allergic to so many things...the allergy formula she's eating now has given us amazing results....as for Mimi, she's just picky and won't touch anything else. (^^)

I feed Raw meat & bones as well, to Gonzo and Fozzie. They really enjoy their food, and it's the best thing for them! I definitely agree that they could not be healthier eating anything else.

I do supplement with veggies, fish oils, multi-vitamins, kelp, and other beneficial additives. ;)

I dont mean to cause a huge discussion, but doesnt everyone need some kind of fiber? I mean, even in the wild, when some kind of carnivore takes down and eats some kind of herbivore, the first thing the eat is the organs that is full of plant material.
I mean, last time I thought, dogs were omnivores, but leaning more to the carnivore side. Cats on the other hand, are pretty much compleatly carnivores.
I've never studied the raw diet, so I could be completely wrong on this....

Or does this mean the people that are feeding their dogs vegetiarian diets are feeding a worst diet then the worst kibble? Even the worst kibble has some kind of meat/bones.

Beneful, satisfies their nutritional needs and it's cost effective (I've got nine dogs).
Umm, Beneful isnt that cheap.....It would cost me about 4X as much to feed Beneful then what I'm feeding. And I'm feeding 12 dogs....

Oh yeah, to answer the original question, I feed Kasco Hi-Energy. Its the cheapest, but still is a pretty decent food. Well, the best, most cost effect 30/20 I can find. Right now its probaby the best we've ever fed. The dogs are doing so much better, and Aurora is getting fat off her 1 cup a day.

right now about 80% canidae and 20% raw. i had been feeding only raw, but right now i'm trying to pinch pennies where i can, and canidae is the best food for the best price. to be honest, i haven't noticed a change in either dog since switching back to kibble.

Oh Lord the whole carnivore debate. Sorry but dogs are OMNIVORES they eat both vegetables, fruits AND meat.

Like a bear eats berries even though their mouth would appear to be designed for only meat.

Howdy!!! I'm paying $10.65 for the 17.6 poung bag of Adult Beneful (5 bags at a time) at my Purina feed store compared to $15.49 at other locations. This same feed store also provides for a majority of the supplies for my ranch. All my dogs are quite healthy, it's crucial, for they work cattle on a frequent basis. I will check out that Kasco Hi-Energy food you mentioned, provided it's available down here.
