Brat is harsh. Little children aren't to blame for not being properly taught or suprvised.
A child that has not been taught how to act properly is a brat in my eyes. A brat, IMO, doesn't look bad for the kid, makes the parents look bad.

To me calling a poorly raised child a "brat" is no better than calling a poorly trained dog (pit bull that bites for example) a "monster"

Both blame the "victim" rather than the offender (parents/bad dog owners)

But that's just me :) I'm a softy for kids and dogs :)

I don't really care if you people think I'm being harsh. I don't appreciate little children chasing me down, grabbing my dog, and squeezing her. I love well behaved children, such as my nephew, who ASK FIRST, and who let the dog sniff them BEFORE they pet them. I do NOT appreciate little boogers who chase me down, screaming, "Doggie!!" and choke my dogs.

I do call poorly trained dogs, monsters. I don't take words too seriously, so I guess we both see the word brat at different levels. I call Chico a monster sometimes, just playing around. A brat to me, isn't a bad kid, just one who doesn't know any better, and I don't blame them for that its not their fault.

Okay :) I figured it was just a definition issue on your and my part.

It's all about what they're taught. What I think would be an excellent program is if kennel clubs would go to local schools (especially at a preschool and kindergarten level) and do a "Dog Smart" program for kids.

I agree with you about the classes. I think learning how to react to a dog is just as important as not talking to strangers (ok, maybe not, but it still is very important).

I know how you feel about everyone feeling like a golden is approachable. I swear every man, woman and child we pass has to have their hands all over Luke. I thought it was just a puppy thing, but now that he's almost six months it's still as bad. If we take him into a pet store, we have to plan an extra half hour for petting. Sometimes I think adults are even more pushy than their kids. Some of his puppy energy still spooks some kids, but it's a good opportunity to let him learn to sit and receive attention.

I am very hesitant around small children that I've never met before. Once, a mother and her 2-year-old boy came up to my golden retreiver, Tigger, and asked to pet her. I said it was all right. Imagine my shock when this child YANKED my golden's ear and poked her in the eye! It was hard enough to make poor Tigger shriek with pain. Mom immediately stopped the child and apologized profusely, but the damage had been done. Tigger never again trusted small toddlers. She would keep her distance from them, and growl if they came too close. No matter what I tried to help her, she never overcame that distrust.

I will let small children pet Zeus, but I stay right next to Zeus and get down to the same level as the child. That way, I can immediately stop the child if it even looks like they'll try to do something unpleasant. I understand that toddlers don't realize what they're doing, but that doesn't mean my dog should suffer the consequences.

I really hope your joking. I'm sure she didn't mean anything by it and she can use whatever breed as an example, all dogs have teeth. If its a pit, then so be it.

Thats not their fault though its the parents. I don't even like kids a whole lot but I would never call one a brat.

I f she didnt mean it like that it's fine, but in a way it sucks because u sually people will put it in a way as if pitbulls are the only dogs that can bite and I dont think people would feel the same way if they see a pit and if they see a Chihuahua and believe my mom has a chihuahua and if they dont feel to good about u they can leave a nasty mark. and is true what u say if it has teeth it can bite.

U people?? If you look at that "pit bull in dog parks" thread you will see I am the first person saying ANY dog has the potential to bite. I had a pit bull when I was 5 years old and my mom trusted that dog more than any other dog we have had.

My grandma has a Chi and he is so mean. If me and my grandmother walked down the street with our dogs, I would advise people to move to my side of the road. Because he WILL attack. I feel safer around pitts than any small dog, because alot of small dogs have like a nepolian complex, so they try to show out.

I think Chi's are mad at the world because they are so little so they try to act all big and bad. My grandma's Chi bosses around Chico, its kind of amusing but then Chico gets mad so I have to hold him.
