Maya gets crated. Hopefully when she is older I will be able to let her have run of the house. The funny thing is she prefers her crate. If I leave her inside and run out to the car to grab something she barks her head off, but when I leave and she is in the crate she is just fine.

Wow. Thanks for the response. I just feel bad somedays thinking they are crated up and can't be outside. I'm afraid to leave our dogs outside (as they are small (one has found her way out once and I'm afraid of a neighbor kid letting them out).

Those of you that leave your dogs outside, aren't you afraid of them jumping/digging/or the evil neighbor kid letting them out?

:)

When Zeus was a pup, he stayed in the fenced yard. If the weather was bad, he stayed in the crate. Now he gets the run of the house when we're gone. "Run" is figuratively speaking of course; he spends almost the entire time snoozing on the couch.

Both Athena and Sal were crated until they were about 1.5 years old. Now they have the run of the house. I never use the crate anymore. I gave Athena's crate away about 4 years ago and Sal's crate is in the basements someplace.

The question I would like to know the answer to...What do they do while we are gone. I have always thought about that...do they sleep, watch out the window, do they play? (most likely a little of all of those)

Kiara is confined to my room making sure everything is away and out of her reach. She gets into things sometimes. I leave her with a stuffed Kong & the television on.

Simba & Nala have full range of our house, other than my room. I also leave the television on for them. I seperate Nala & Kiara because they play ROUGH and I don't want them accidently hurting eachother while I'm gone.

I've tested my dogs before and put pieces of yummy food around the house before I left. They were sleeping while I did it so they didn't see me. The pieces were still there when I got home, and they were just getting up from the same spot they were in hours ago. Meaning they don't move a muscle while i'm gone.. lazy mutts!

My mom works at home, so there's never really any time when Molly is alone. When we do leave though, she has run of the house. She pretty much just sleeps anyway, it's the cat we have to worry about, enticing her to do things. ;) :p

Mine have access to the same rooms as when we're home - kitchen, corridor and computer room. The living room is the cats' room :D

When she was younger we would use the crate but now my boxer has run of the house, however; we do shut the doors to all of the bedrooms expect the guest bedroom...in the event her majesty should wish to lay on the bed.

They basically have free reign except for a couple rooms in which I shut the door. I also have a dogwalker come twice a day.
