What do you do that makes casual dog owners balk?

I saw your sister at the park yesterday!!!! LOL
Omg hahaha!! I want to meet Merlin, this is so not fair. :( Was she staring at you while you examined Merlin's stool? :rofl1:

Oh, and yeah, the pedigree research thing. I'm a little obsessed, I would definitely be considered crazy if I told anyone. Considering the puppy isn't born and I am considering two breedings. Dear god it makes pedigree research hard when the father is long dead, phew.

This too. I don't really talk to anyone about it, although I did talk with the vet about her pedigree when we took her for her very first appointment since the vet complimented her build and her temperament. The majority of dogs around here are either mixed breeds or BYB dogs, so most people would have no idea what I was talking about and none would understand why I'd spend extra money by going to a breeder instead of someone next door.

- I feed raw, and have a very large freezer for it. And I drive 7hrs one-way to get it.

- I bought a vehicle specifically for the dogs, and it only seats 2 people now because I have crates in it.

- I have five of them.

- Dog activities take precedence over "normal activities"

- I have tons of internet "dog friends"

- my Facebook image is of Poison. Most of my friends have their dogs as their image too.

Pretty much everything I do with Henry blows people away, and it's nothing extreme. Kind of sad actually. Few understand the feeding, training, time, and investment I've made in him. Only my parents and my husband really understand my obsession.

Most of the people I know have a dog out in the yard, and that's about it.

You guys have pretty much mentioned everything already:

That Caleb is actualy, gasp trained. People can't get over what he does and doesn't do, and I constantly hear about how their dogs would never do/not do that.

Caleb has over inside 100 toys (haven't counted to outside toys in awhile).

That Caleb has food allergies/sensitivies. I get a lot of "OMG- what do you feed him if he can't have beef and grains?"

He gets sardines and raw eggs once a week.

I make training treats for him.

I give him veggies and fruit.

The area behind the seat of my truck is set up for Caleb (Ford Ranger with extended cab)- memory foam topped with a saddle blanket, a non splash water dish and a couple of chews. And along the training lines there- even tho he's capable, he doesn't jump into the front seat or jump out of the truck when I open the doors.

I groom Caleb myself. I mean, how hard is it to brush, bathe, do ears, nails and paw hair on a Lab? I even thought about clipping my grandmother's Poodle when we had her, but I was nervous about using the clippers.

I look at everything with a "how can I use that for training" mentality. Especially now that we're doing Nosework- I'm always looking at things to put hides in.

ETA- Something else that blows a lot of casual dog owners away- I don't rush to the vet for every little thing. Between having grown up on a farm, working for my vet awhile ago, and reading, I'm able to take care of most things myself. That's not to say Caleb doesn't go in for more than his annuals, just that he doesn't go for every little scrape, bump or bruise. I was the same way with the boys when they were growing up.

I get weird looks/comments all the time about the number of animals I have.

"Two rats, one hamster, three dogs, soon to be a fourth dog, and a dog and cat that live with my parents." -> makes them go :yikes:.

Although I've never had four dogs at once before, this is actually the least amount of pets I've had in probably ten years. Especially maintenance wise.

LOL I get the funny looks when we're out someplace and I say, "Excuse me" to Caleb when he isn't paying attention.

Well, I have two dogs and live by myself. "Why do you need two?" Well, because one of them is my beloved couchwarmer/holder downer and one is my fun activity dog. I encourage all sorts of "bad dog" behavior. I encourage Nico to bark at me when he wants something, I encourage him to jump up on me/my car/whatever else happens to be around.

Well that time I drove to Ohio to pick up a puppy from someone I knew on the internet made a couple of people scratch their heads.
Moving dogs long distances seems to be very strange to many people...to me it's a hallmark of a dedicated dog person. The dog for you is elsewhere. your average person would go "Oh well, I'll find another one." Us crazy people find a way to get THAT one where it needs to be :D

Flying halfway across the country to get a dog from someone on the internet.

Flying a dog to South Carolina to someone on the internet.

Freaking out (in a good way!) because I GET TO MEET A LOT OF DOG PEOPLE FROM THE INTERNET IN PERSON!!!! AND THEIR DOGS!!!!! :rofl1:

Feeding anything other than dog food and dog treats. Eggs, fruits, vegetables, meat, bones...WHY DO YOU GIVE THOSE TO YOUR DOGS?! (Logan thinks he's a frugivore and even likes oranges and kiwis.)

I bathe my dog every 1-2 weeks.

I pick up and occasionally examine my dog's poop.

I don't let every random dog and stranger say hi to my dog. And I move away from dogs on flexis.

My relatively new friends/workmates here are possibly much too polite to say what they are thinking or they are just really easy-going. I natter on about my dogs incessantly (it didn't help that they weren't here with me until yesterday) and they just listen and sometimes ask questions. Apparently they can't wait to meet them.

I did have somebody that was really, really puzzled as to why I would go to the expense of building a dog run (really just some of the yard fenced off and attached to the outdoor area) when I already have a fully fenced yard. The way I see it is that I am completely and utterly responsible for my dogs. I am in a new town with new neighbours and I personally cannot stand having dogs out unsupervised in the front yard. I believe that you should have a safe path to the front door unless you want to padlock the gate and stick an intercom system in. I like that the meter reader can come in without being harassed by my dogs. I like that I can have locks on my enclosure and my back gate and pretty much not worry about them while I'm at work. They can have the rest of the yard when I'm out with them, no problem.

It's all about risk minimisation and piece of mind for me. If by some freak accident they were let out of their pen, they've still got the boundary fence. I can't be responsible for the actions of others (trespass, leaving gates open etc., wandering children and dogs), but I can sure as hell make sure that I have done everything possible to protect my dogs.

I also chose my rental based on the backyard and the back patio. Perfect for the dogs. The house is old and daggy and a small two bedroom. Perfect for just me and great for the dogs. They are far from destructive, but I don't have to worry about scratched floors etc as the place is just vinyl and really daggy. But as I said, it's perfect for us. It's certainly not everyone's cup of tea, but I'd hate to be in a new place with dogs and obsess about every move they make. This place has seen it's fair share of wear and tear, but it's home. All the more so now that the dogs are here!

Pretty much everything that's been said already on this thread :D.

But...my mom (who is very much a casual dog owner), says to me all the time "This dog has been to a million training classes, and he acts like THAT?". I find people don't really 'get' what group classes are really just for learning commands and working in distraction, not really 'specific behavior' training.

My mom also doesn't get when to reward things. Like..Skye sometimes barks at me when she wants attention/food in my hands. I ignore her, and when she quiets down and goes somewhere else, I will go give her a treat. My mom always says "Niiice, so you just rewarded that barking!". Ugh. You don't get it.

Mostly that I have four dogs. Some people actually think it's cruel to have more than two dogs max, apparently.

That I go to training classes and enjoy learning different dog sports. "But don't you already know everything? I just trained my dog myself".

That we feed raw and also that when I buy kibble, it's way more than $30 per bag (I only wish I could find a good kibble that cheap lol).

That I dremel their nails rather than clip. And sometimes people are shocked that I do their nails myself at all rather than take them somewhere.

Having four dogs all from breeders. So many people think I'm terrible because of it.

Going to a different province for Journey. "I just saw some of those same kinds of puppies on Kijiji for $200!". Who knew I could have saved myself so much trouble and money?

I think those are the main ones! I also find it funny when people are completely shocked at certain things my dogs can/have been trained to do, that barely took any time, but people think I'm magic for it because their dog can't do it (like leave food alone, or hold a stay, or lay down when I raise my hand, or not chew stuff and wreck the house).

Oh people think I'm nuts for wanting a second dog. Including my family. Most insist that another dog would be replacing Izzie... Because there's no way you can have more than one dog without practically throwing away the first one.

I get a lot of "so what would happen to Izzie?" Or "poor Izzie is being dumped" or "can't you just be happy with the dog you have?"

It's tiring.
