What do you call your long lost best friend?

I lost my best friend, Hoover, almost 7 months ago. I still miss him every single day. :( I brought home a new puppy because I thought that would help, but it hasn't. Now I find myself having to distinguish between the two dogs by saying something like "my old dog" or "my last dog", but somehow that just sounds disrespectful to me, like he's been replaced, and he hasn't. Can anyone else think of something better to say? How do you guys refer to your long lost friends?

BTW - I love the puppy too, but nothing could ever replace my buddy Hoover.

hmmm... Well I know with Max I can say "my first dog", but if he was not your first you could always say something like "my dog Max who past away". I know saying old dog or last dog sounds bad but he knows you love him and have not replaced him, you have simply made another friend to help you with your loss and fill the void in your heart. I'm sorry for your loss :(

I go between referring to Meisha as either "my old dog" or "my first dog"...sometimes "the dog I had before Sawyer"...

I don't think it's disrespectful unless you say "my dead dog Fido..."
