Gordy had a huge clump of sleep on his eye. It looked kind of like pus. So I checked his eye and it is red/black on the cornea, where it should be white. The ring around his iris is really thick and black, more so then his other eye. I can't get a proper look because he moves too much.

He seems fine. But I really don't like the look of it and the vet is not open until Monday..

What should I do?

Good news is that he is fine… Vet said it will clear up and gave me some cream to put in his eye. She said it is swollen more so then the other. Pus is coming out of both eyes, one more then the other. With the colour, the Vet says it is redder/darker then normal.

The black around his iris that I was talking about, looking at it now, I am not sure if it is just normal and I haven’t noticed it before. I do check his eye’s often to get him used to it for times like this.

His cornea isn’t scratched. Vet guesses something may have gotten into his eye and he may have been rubbing at it to go like that. I haven’t seen him rubbing his eye.

He has been around another dog, who I told her was recently taken to the vet and given eye drops for what could be the same thing; pus and red eyes. She said he wouldn’t have got it from that dog.

Wish I didn’t jump the gun. On the phone the vet said it would be an extra $20 for the AH. After she finished examining and when we went to pay, she totaled it to $135. I thought for a second: $50 regular consultation, emergency extra $20, that’s $70. Surely the cream can’t be $65. I asked what that total was for, she said, it’s an additional $70 for AH emergency… eek… I told her I was told $20, but she says she said $70… arghh, wish I had heard that properly.

The eye wasn’t bothering him at all. I would have waited had I known the cost until I got a hold of my brother so he could call his friend’s mum who is a vet and get her advice.

In conclusion: Gordy isn’t going blind and I am a worry wart.

Friend thinks it is conjunctivitis and suggested washing his eyes out with salt & water. Anyone know if this is okay to do?

I know this is an older post but I just wanted to mention that I brought my dog (Davey) to the vet for something similar. Turns out his tear ducts don't drain well and if he gets a cold or virus the eye discharge looks sort of "snotty".

The vet told me that I can clean out Davey's eyes regularly with saline solution, which is used for contacts and you can buy pretty cheaply.
