All i have to say is dog training matts are a blessing...It too cold here still for him to go outside...(got him about three days ago, has short hair bare belly) though it has warmed up today so ill take him for his second walk.Hes 8 weeks and great at walking..hes so laid back. Though through the pas few days i have been teaching him to use the potty matts...and already today most og his accidents...4 so far have been on the matt...I just have to transfer the matts to outside so i guess he'll know to go outside..but then when i take the matt away outside .. he should by then just know to go outside? Never used training matts before so i dont know

Well first things first. He's a puppy! Things take time to learn! Consistency and routine are vital in the potty training process!
He is a puppy with a bare belly, but being outside to do his business will not hurt him not one bit. Heck, the cold may even make him want to go quicker!

Secondly, I strongly suggest crate training him instead of using puppy pads. Pads are just an accident waiting to happen! Toss those suckers in the trash!!

Start a routine with him. Wake up, go out (FIRST thing when he wakes up), bring him in... then go about your day like normal, and taking him out for a walk/playtime after meals (playing and walking gets the process going, if you catch my drift!). Remember that he is still young yet, so this will take time.

When he isn't being watched, put him in the crate. This will make a "home" for him, and he will be less likely to potty in the crate, as dogs don't like to soil their "den". Make it comfy by putting toys and things that are familiar to him in there with him, and a few chewys to keep him busy.

And lastly, PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE!!! Any time he uses the bathroom outside, tell him how much a good boy he is, love on him, play with him. I don't recommend giving treats when housebreaking, as the pup will associate peeing outside with a treat, and will begin to expect it every time.

Hope this has helped!!

If it were me, I'd forget the mats and use the outdoors. How cold is it? I wouldn't worry about that. To make the trips quicker, use a leash and walk your pup around a little to help him go, give a yummy treat and lots of praise immediately when he just finishes. That will help him to hurry up and go in the future trips outside. No playtime until he goes potty. Take him out frequently, about every 1/2 to 45 minutes. Read the thread in the training forum which has a blue thumbtack by it called something like housebreaking without being mean. There is a lot of good advice there. Going inside, whether or not it's on mats can confuse the dog about going outside. He's still getting the idea that it's OK to go inside. I live in a very cold climate in winter and have 4 short haired dogs. They do just fine.

My2puppies, believe me, he will survive a few minutes outside to use the bathroom! He does have fur, you know, and that is exactly what it's for!!

It sometimes gets to 30 below zero F where I live and I have a Doberman, a short haired mix and two Chihuahuas....they're just fine. Don't make a fuss over the shivering. Get a coat if you want and don't let your pup know that you're worried. If she shivers and cowers and you talk to her, fuss over her, it will just make her worse. She'll get use to it. A quick potty trip and back inside isn't going to kill your dog.
