I didnt get to name Shelby, that was already her name when I got her, but her nickname is Shlieben which I am pretty sure means "sleep" in German, which is what she does all the time so that fits.

Marley, I got to name. His full name is Marley Magee. I have always wanted to name a dog Marley, because of Bob Marley. But, I also thought he should have a middle name, so I went with Magee because of the song "Bobby Magee" by Janis Joplin.

I play that song often for Marley and tell him he was named after it! He doesnt really seem to care, but i sing it to him anyway. :)

We named our poodle, Melon, because her first nap at home was in a watermelon box
Snowy: because he is as white as snow
Barny: his breeder named him Barny, and we didn't change it. I was going to name him "Dream" because one day, while I was sleeping, I dreamt of owning a border collie

Our dog Beau got his name from my then 2 year old who wanted to call him Bo-bo..and since Beau means handsome we thought it would be funny......Our new pup is named after Tom Brady (Patriots Quarterback) b/c I think he is so very hot (lol), and our youngest can say Brady pretty well (it was either that or bubbles-his vocab is still pretty limited)........

Hannah picked her own name. I had wanted to name her Shadow or something like that and then I just mentioned the name Hannah and she perked her ears and that was it her name has been Hannah ever since. For the first few days Hannah was simply called "pup pup". That is how I got her to come to me was to call her "pup pup" she heard that and would just run head on for me with her little puppy tail wagging. Lily we named because we like the movie What About Bob. The doctor's sister's name in the movie is Lily and there is a part at the doctor's birthday and they surprise him with his sister and he lets out this excited "Lily!" so we just liked the name and she likes it too. Our old dog Mack was named after the semi trucks and our old Husky we named Shelby after the car and I don't know why we named our one puppy Maverick (maybe because he caused so much trouble for us).

Murphie was a very rambunctious little pup when I first brought her home. A common refrain around our house was "What have you done now?! Jesus Murphie!!" :D
And thus...Murphie, Murph, Murpher, Smurph etc. She also commonly gets called Puptart and Stinker.
A lot of folks have said to me "Murphie?! Thats not a girl's name!" And I respond sweetly "You are right. Murphie is a dog."

We named our Boxer/English Bulldog Tusker, because we got him right after I got back from Kenya. We went with school for a class, and I wanted to name him something from there. Almost everyone we know has a dog named after some sort of beer/alcohol (Killian, Natty, Hennesey, Smirnoff, Bud...), so we decided to keep with the tradition. Tusker was the Kenyan brand of beer, so there we go. Besides, the other names sounded a bit too feminine. :)

Mojo's full name is Mojo Zephyr Zen.
I knew that getting my next dog would hopefully help change my life. So I sat down and thuoght about names that would help with those changes. And one night while dreaming it came to me that I should name my dog Mojo Zephyr Zen...
Mojo = magic
Zephyr = both wind of change and it's a name of a train
Zen = Peaceful Living

Then I went out and found the dog that fit me - not looking for a specific breed just a set of characteristics that I needed - ie: smallish, friendly, short fur, easy-going but fearless, fairly quiet.

Who do I find after a year and a half of searching? But my Mojo, although he was known as Cutter at the time. And i believe he fits his name.

And yes, his arrival into my life helped to change it. I've been making changes ever since he came into my life that has allowed me to be more happy. He's been the best dog I've ever had.

Meh. Plans change, so do names. :) I've got a ton of names picked out for my future Doberman.

Right now I'm really liking Jadis and Aeris for a girl. Before that I liked the name Shady. Before Shady, I liked Willow. I'm 99.9% sure I will not get a male, but if I ever do, his name would be Draco.

My mom named Molly, she was going to use that name for whatever female pup or dog we got.

I named King that because right after I got him, I took him to puppy kindergarten, and he began disrupting class, and ignoring the trainers (and me) most of the time. He just wanted to play with the other pups and didn't care about anything else really. I was thinking about several other names, but couldn't decide on anything (The trainer suggested, as a joke, "Hitler" or "Satan". She said he was one of the most stubborn and smartest dogs she had seen in her entire life. His nickname was "Evil Genius", and I almost called him E.G.)

A week or so after I got him, I took him to a "fun night" thing, and he messed with every dog there, regardless of size or age. When he, at a whopping 15 pounds or so, totally wore out a 90 pound Doberman to the point he was about to pass out after wrestling with him for a half hour straight, along with a lab who's still a buddy today, and a GSD pup that ended up terrified of him after that, even after he was over 100 pounds a few months later. When the Dobe was totally wiped out, he just rolled over, and King stood up on top of him, and someone said "He's king of the mountain" I named him King right then. It just fits.

I just got three puppies, 2 small ones who are sisters from a breeder and I called one Aspen cuz her fur looks like the bark of an Aspen tree and Alli because she is a sweet kind little girl who doesn't bother anyone. That name reminded me of someone that would have that type of personality. The third one who is a border collie we called Karma, just because of the meaning of Karma and the links it has to religion.

Harley - he was named after a pony that my sister rode on a trail ride.
Abby - We just all agreed on the name, we all liked it (her name doesn't really come from anywhere). Her name was actually Chloe when we got her, but we thought it didn't really suit her at all.

Athena -- I am a social studies teacher and have likee greek mythology since I was a child. Athena was a strong and wise goddess. I also wanted a name that was different but easy to say.

Saladin -- Same here as far as the Teacher thing, I am also interested in the Crusades. Saladin was the leader of the Muslims during the third Crusade. Saladin was a wise, honorable and just ruler especially compared to Richard the Lionheart who was his counterpart with the Christians. I usually call him Sal (unless he is in trouble ;) )

I lost a sister and her 2 children 30 years ago and belong to many True Crime and Murdered Family websites. I don't know if any of you follow that type of thing, but there was a case a couple of years ago where Scott Peterson murdered his 8 month pregnant wife Laci. I got soooo involved with that case as it hit close to home for me. Their dog, was called MacKenzie, so I named Kenzie after theirs in Laci's and Conner's(they had named her unborn son) memory. Hence Miss MacKenzie :)

I've only named one of my four dogs. He was a registered sheltie named King George V. I named him after the battleship that sank the Bismark in WWII . His used name was Champ after the 78 movie.

My current lab chessy X was named by the wife. My latest addition was named Zeus by his original owner and although I tried to rename him Doug, it really didn't stick in the least.

When I was little I always wanted to have a dog named Dutchess. Well when we got Midnite I was pretty set on giving her the name Dutchess, but my mom talked me out of it. So we debated over Midnite and Shadow for awhile and then finally settled on Midnite. Not very original, but I was nine and it was better than my dad who wanted to name her Blackie!
