I'm outlining a redonkulously ginormous project right now in the form of a dog breed book. Right now I'm compiling a list of breeds to include and want input! Besides the "normal" breeds, what else would you want to see included? What are some of the breeds you look for in every breed book and are disappointed you can never find them?

I hope to be able to include pictures and info from both working/showing sides of breeds that have huge splits (GSD, BC and the like).

It would be nice to have a papillon pictured in a book that actually looked pretty. Most always look like badly bred LH chis. And something that portrayed them accurately would be nice. I've seen so many that label them extremely calm lapdogs. And I read one that said they were aggressive.

Other than that.... Icelandic sheepdogs, Cirnecos, Podengos, Pyr Sheps...

Mention that Pugs can be active please... and that they're insanely active during the puppy phase ;)

If Izzie was a well bred pug i'd volunteer her picture.

Oh and Peruvian Inca Orchids... They're a dog not a flower i promise :p

This is my opinion baised on this breed, but I would love to see the Border Collie viewed at a *working* dog and nothing else. I.E. it's a working breed, not a show breed.

Tibetan Mastiff, Picardy Shepherd........Hmmm I will have think of more. But those are two breeds I would like to see.

Also some honest information about Labradors ;). That they airn't for "everybody". And that yes field bred Labs can be pets. I think you know what to write about Labs after Virgo :D.

I think I would rather like to see not ignoring show bred BCs, but acknowledging the split, like with the GSDs.

Besides the most common ones that are always in dog breed books, I'd like to see the New Guinea Singing Dog, Sloughhi, Podengo (all varieties), Lundehund, Kooikerhonje, Swedish Vallhund, Mudi, Alaskan Klee Kai, and the Fila of course. :D

Same here, just because you (general you) dont like them or agree with the practice they ARE there, and what better then to show that they are DIFFERENT and why then to ignore them completely.

Sure thing Zoom! :D

I agree. The splits exist and I'd love to see something that deals with them OBJECTIVELY. I have never seen that in a book.

Maybe feature a pic of a smooth coated Chow in addition to the rough coat. Even though most dog books include the standard, which says a smooth coat is allowed, people seem to graze over that and insist the coat type doesn't exist:rolleyes:

Also, "aloof" does not equal "naughty"

Breeze, that was one of the ideas I had as well. :) The harder part is going to be getting the permission to use those pictures/dogs, because who wants to be published as an example of "bad/ugly"? Probably hit up the shelters for those, I think.

Grab, I'm also hoping to work in the different coat types that aren't typical but around, like your smooth Chow, or the long-haired Weim.

I agree 110%:hail:

If your going to go into coat type on breeds. I think it would be interesting for a book to address natural mismarks in Labs. I think they are interesting.

That's a good idea - show the differences and the split. :) Rather than lumping them all together.

The way I'd see it is there would be pages about border collies or GSDs and it would show all sorts of 'well bred' dogs of varying types and then there could be a section talking about each type, hopefully very objectively. What is the common look of each type, what are the breeders going for, etc.

Also, Zoom, include smooth pyr sheps for sure.

Kangals, Thai Ridgebacks and Presa Canarios (you could talk about the different standards people breed presas to) would be neat to see.

I'd like to see something about coat varieties with Dachshunds. Lots of books only show the typical colors. Also a snip about breeding certain colors/coats isn't recommended.

...oh and some good info about the health problems they face. :)

A picture of a sable GSD. I've only ever seen black/tans (or reds) and while sable is usually listed under "color description", it's never pictured and most people don't seem to know they exist in that color. Same deal goes for long coat GSDs, which people are convinced MUST be mixed with collies!
