when Aesop was a puppy, a lady said, with certainty, "ah, he's a Chow/Sharpei?". A little boy also called him a lion not long ago.

One thing I notice is that little kids seem to recognize my dogs are Chihuahuas better than a lot of adults. Many grown ups ask me what they are. Funny.
Little kids surprise me too. Most call him a "Lassie dog", but hey atleast they got the right idea. And more surprisingly is since he only wears blue and greens, boy colours. I would assume every one knows he is a boy. But all grown ups ask about "her". One little boy a few weeks ago said, "what a pretty dog" and his friend piped up and said "Thats a boy, silly. He is wearing a green collar and leash". I was surprised of how observent he was for a 6-8 year old.

I get "what kind of mix is that" with Lily - then I really don't want to tell them "sorry it's a pitbull and purebred"...just to see 70% recoil in horror, and the other 30% say cool dog do you fight it, or proceed to tell me a horror story about a pitbull

Lacey doesn't get mistaken for anything, I think the bat ears give it away and typical black and tan color.

Rylie has never been mistaken... although we get the occasional person asking if she's a "teacup."

Chloe has been mistaken for a husky puppy... haha... and a JRT.

Someone asked if Tucker was a yorkie... and people generally ask what kind of dog he is. Then when I say he's a longcoated chi, they give me a funny look like I'm lying. People don't seem to realize that there is a LC variety of chis.

Amstaffer-If i had just met your dog i would probably have guessed it was a possibility by the face the shaoe looks very boxerish.
Really? You think Athena looks to have a boxer influence in her head? Her muzzle is longer and not pushed in at all. He muzzle is actually more old style pit bull and not even as square as Sal's

I see absolutely no boxer whatsoever in Athena...? Lmao.

I always get people asking what Spy is mixed with. I think the majority just don't realize that BC's can come in more colours than just the traditional black and white.

Tucker normally gets retriever mix. Which is what he is :D

the pug face in boxers is a post WWII show thing. boxers from before then had a nice square muzzle. in fact most people seeing pics from then would assume they were pits.

Oh Summer gets called a boy ALL the time. I don't know why, she's tiny and fluffy and all the others (boys included) are called girls. To me she looks very feminine, slender, dainty, but she's always a 'he'. I even branched out and got her neon pink collars and leashes to try to help. It hasn't been helping at all yet.

I forgot the time the whole elementary exclaimed that Summer was a 'Beverly Hills Chihuahua'. that one amused me.

Oh, I forgot, I've had several people ask me what breeder I got my "beautiful border collie" from... At least they get it right that she has border collie in her - they just don't look at her square face and thing "Whoops, that's wrong!"

People don't know what the he*l Zoey is, most of the time... So instead of guessing, they ask what breed.

Kharma is, of course, either a Bloodhound or a Great Dane but she's unique looking enough that most people who hazard a guess will say they THOUGHT she might be one of those breeds, but she's different.

In this area, anyone who is from here knows what Tallulah is. Those who don't have no idea other than she's a cute, sweet little dog . . . and then they ask and I tell them and they act like they've just been petting a cobra.

Joey is usually called a mini boxer/baby boxer. Otherwise he's usually a bulldog or a pit bull puppy.

Back in Iowa most people didn't have a clue what a boston terrier was, but since I've moved here to Illinois most people seem to know what he is and he gets lots of cuddles.

Stranger: "Wow, what a big Scottie you have there...I didn't realize they are so big."

Me: "No, it's a ~Skye~ Terrier, like look up at the blue stuff in the air...from the Isle of Skye. They are big dogs on short legs."

Stranger: "Ah, but what a lovely Scottie you have. He's so calm."

Me: "Thanks."

--and repeat.

The gender thing is funny. Docket is often called a "she" which I can sort of understand, because he does LOOK like a bitch. Except that half people who say that wouldn't have the slighest idea what a dog or a bitch looks like without checking the private parts. Sarama is often called a he . . . and she doesn't look at all masculine to me.

I've noticed its worse when they are together . .. I guess they assume the little one must be a girl and the big one a boy.

Smudge is ALWAYS a girl as he usually has more fur and is smaller, Cider is ALWAYS a boy as she's larger and usually more naked. Though most of Smudges stuff is Blue, and most of Cider's stuff is pink....

Took Kiba out on her birthday once, she had on her pink tshirt with a sparkly cupcake on it that red IM THE BIRTHDAY GIRL. Someone bent down and said to her "Poor boy, your mommy has you wearing pink" *facepalm*

Kiba was always a boy, then Stryder came and she was a girl again.

Uncle Fred is always a boy, you can't miss it. But Mini is also always a boy. I will grant that she is a tomboy, and even lifts her leg to pee, but her name is Mini, who would name a male dog Mini?
