All the dogs we have owned have been very protective of us. Tag Along - Dachsund/American Cocker Spaniel; Bishop - Labrador/English Pointer; Ebony - Labrador/Dalmation; Sunny - Boxer/English Pointer

They make that bond...I do have a strange story, though...I have an Aunt that claims to this day that her Terrier mix tried to follow a burglar home...I have no idea if that is true, though.

Years ago in a city close to us was a big story in the news about a family who had someone break into their house and they would have been killed had it not been for their tiny dog. I dont remember what kind of dog it was except it was a small dog and the family was so shocked, they had no idea their little dog could protect them like he did.

I do know that Weimaraner are a good and protective breed with a lovely temperment but they don't like to be left alone that much, they crave human affection and do not like to be placed in kennels. As Serena said that any dog will protect it's owner once a bond has been formed, another choice is my favourite Doberman, a very protective breed from what i've heard when you buy a doberman they own everything you do including yourself lol :D

Huskies tend to be very laid back in the way that they are generally unfased by most things,it's a good trait in some ways as they are usually solid characters. One thing though off-lead training is near enough impossible with this breed, they love too run as a breed bred to run e.g. Pulling Sleds which is a popular sport assosiated with the breed, so if you let one loose he/she would probably run off and you wont get them back (very fast runners) and they'll stop... when they've had enough lol.

I don't want to discourage your mother from wanting one but i do know some people with huskies. They are a very lovable dog and the do have a misheavious and also a destructive side if they get bored.

Here's a pictures of damage done by a husky (may take a minute to load):

... :D

No, they are a very loving breed, their like big teddies. It's just like with any dog when you leave them home alone and they get bored they find ways of entertaining themselves and this is one way. There are other disadvantages as there is advantages to this breed as there is with any breed :) .

Huskies need exercise - you'll need to get out and jog or skate or something like that to keep one in good physical health. They shed that undercoat, so they need regular brushing. Neither of those things are necessarily a problem though if you're willing to do them.

Huskies are lovely dogs, playful, loyal, loving, mischievious, beautiful . . . and overbred. So if you want one, be very careful where you get it! I'd really suggest checking out rescues.

And the perfect dog might very well be sitting in a pound somewhere, just waiting to be taken home and loved. That's the dog that's going to take care of you no matter what.

2Pups, it sounds like a Husky or Malamute might be a good match for you! The Malamute is quite a bit larger than the Husky, but they share many traits. I've been told that sometimes the Malamutes can be a little easier to work with, but I really don't know from any personal experience if this is true or not. I've never lived with a Husky, but did foster a beautiful Malamute girl for a couple of months (I would have kept her myself, but Purdue was about 10 years old at the time and was far too jealous to tolerate her - and she was too jealous to tolerate him) and she was a delightful dog, full of life, very affectionate and very protective of me. She was perfectly fine with our cat, too.

One thing about the Malamutes is that they have never achieved the popularity of the Husky and have not been quite as overbred.

It might not be too difficult to find either a Husky or Malamute at a rescue, either a general rescue or a breed specific rescue.

anyone have a husky thats what my mother wants
Most huskies are not guard dogs. But when i was younger I had a female named Sheba and she was very protective of me. Any stranger she would litterally try to attack if they got to close.

Here's some stuff I know about American bulldogs.

American- It is a bold and lively breed that varies in size and color. Its Robust and well muscled and is well liked by those who want a powerful dog. It is best to be owned by a handler and must be socialized at a young age while it is young. They do not to be groomed and is a harder breed to strain and are known for a stubborn way.
