Joey is kind of an odd dog. When he's walking he doesn't meander or sniff. He stays on the sidewalk (unless pottying) and wants to walk at a very fast pace. We are always passing people. Then again, I walk at a fast pace too so he probably picked that up from me. Bf gets kinda annoyed walking with us because he is not a fast walker, lol!

Whenever he stays at my parents house my mom comments on how weird it is that he doesn't sniff things while on a walk. Their dogs, especially the beagle, have their noses to the ground a lot of the way. She likes it though because he doesn't stop to sniff the deer trail or rotting carcass in the ditch. Dad says it's because he's a city dog. :lol-sign:

What's your dog like on a walk?

On leash, she's not the best. She always wants to walk fast like me, but my sister walks slow so she tries to pull my sister.

Off leash, atleast for me, she'll wander to a point, then look back and either wait there or come back and herd me to get me going quicker lol. She stops and smells when she has to pee... that's about it.

Lucy is perfect. Sometimes I have to check to make sure she's still attached to the leash LOL our walking is so in sync it doesn't feel like I even have a dog with me. The only time she loses focus is when we see rabbits... those things bring out the worst in her.

Juno is... ah... she's Juno. :) She tries to stop and sniff and eat everything. If we pass other dogs she starts hopping around and whining because she wants to play. And if we pass people, her little butt starts wiggling because she's expecting some attention lol. For the most part she's fine to walk though, some things just get her a bit excited haha.

Phoebe is at about the same pace as me, if she starts to get to the end of her leash I say "slow" and she slows down. She will stop and sniff certain places, she likes to mark. If she sniffs anything for too long I can say "Let's go" and she moves on. Overall she's easy to walk, I wish she had a bit more stamina and didn't randomly stop in front of me to shake her body causing me to step on her but other than that she's pleasant to walk with.

Depends on the distractions. Sometimes she's an angel. Often she's a brat, pulling this way and that, wanting to chase bikes/motorcycles/cars, etc. We're working on it and when I get her to focus, she behaves.

Dance is super easy, but boring. She always sticks by my side (which I like), or lags behind. Never sniffs anything, holds her tail down, etc. Doesn't matter what I do to try and make it fun. She looks so depressed and bored during on-leash walks and makes me feel like I'm wasting my time, haha.

Ripley's only been on a couple and has been good. He seems to be understanding that he's to walk on a loose leash, but doesn't quite get where I want him positioned. That'll come though. He's very well behaved and happy on a walk. Nothing ever bothers him -- not lunging, snarling dogs (like one we passed last week), not kids, nothing. He's so easy going.

Keira... I don't enjoy walking Keira on-leash most of the time. She hardly focuses on me, pulls every so often, and always seems to be in a hurry to get somewhere. Although, that's how she does most things in life, haha. Always in a hurry. She's definitely not bad, but I don't feel she pays as much attention as she should on a walk. But yet, when I walk her with Dance, she's perfect.

9/10 times my dogs are walked off-leash in designated areas. We all enjoy it more that way. :)

LOL, I just posted this which is kind of relevant.

http://www.chazhound.com/forums/t104509/

Summer is perfect. Completely perfect. She automatically heels most the time and doesn't blink at a dog or person. I allow her to sniff things if she wants and she looooves to watch, stalk, and try to catch squirrels. I let her have fun with them, lol. I can take her on a lead anywhere without worrying. We've even had elephants cross the road in front of her and it didn't phase her.

Mia...see above link, lol. She runs in the grass and goes along next to me just grinning and bouncing and nipping the grass as she bounces over it. Then she'll randomly dive face first into the grass and come up with the craziest, happiest grin you've ever seen. It's adorable. Other than that though, no pulling, no reaction to people (except to grin at them), or dogs. She's great for a puppy.

Keely is Perfection on and off the leash.. Keely isnt Allowed to sniff.. I have been training her with leash manners since the day I got her. She is always right there behind me.

Kacee is, Surprisingly perfect OFF the leash. If I tell her to stay next to me, She does. She walks at my pace.. On leash and she is pulling rediculously hard. No matter what I do..

Hahaha that's how Lucy is. She looks like she's just hating every minute of it. When I grab the leashes or if I say "wanna go for a walk?" she gets pretty excited and runs to the door, but I think that's just because she doesn't want to be left home... not because she actually enjoys walking. :D

My dogs are fine on leashes and off leash. Mine are not trained to the hilt...I don't need them to focus on me too much. They're just good as gold for the most part...don't pull or anything. We take things pretty casually. They have a few rules when off leash in the woods which we've just sort of developed over the years, like coming when called, returning to the trail when asked, checking in without being told... etc. On leash, they walk all right and get to sniff frequently when I offer it to them. They're mildly dog reactive because they don't come across that many dogs, but it's usually a very short lived and mild little "ruff ruff." Occassionally we may practice some little tricks like stopping and sitting, walking more nicely, but the dogs I have now, the Chi's are really just pets and they've told me that tight heel work and constant eye contact etc just isn't their life style, that they're getting too old for that stuff. LOL.:D

My two older collies are easy. They never have their noses to the ground and they never pull or zig zag. My newer girl (Karma) is a different story. She is a puller and sniffs everything. I got her a backpack and put some light weight things in it and it helped a ton. It put her in job mode and there was ton of slack in the leash. I did not have to correct her once.

Usually Auggie is at the end of the leash, weaving back and forth, sniffing away. I don't mind. We walk so he can do that, not so we can practice heeling exercises or anything, LOL. I took him out to a park once with a nice walking path and he was just raring to go. I started walking faster and he walked faster. I started running... he started running. I was cracking up the whole time (not very beneficial for successful running!) He'll basically go as fast as you let him. He is not actually a puller, he just wants to be pretty much at the end of the lead. He knows how far out he can walk and so he does.

It drives my mom crazy though, so when she walks with him, she makes him heel, which he does nicely. She seems to have serious trouble walking behind him when he's going LOOK AT THAT WHAT'S OVER THERE WHAT IS THAT OH MY GOSH THIS SMELLS FANTASTIC and I'm not totally sure why, because I don't have any issues with it - and my strides are much longer than hers, so you'd think I would be the one running into him...

Holly stays at my side no matter what speed. But she's a lab with a big hunting drive and sniffs a lot. Sometimes she will get carried away with a sent and start to pull or stop dead. I just have to say "Hollyyy..heel" and she trots back into place. I speed walk a lot and she loves to jog along side me and won't sniff at anything. She's fantastic when we go jogging too. The only issue I have with her is when we meet up with other dogs, she growls and totally blanks me out. Once the dog is past, I will sit her down and make her look me in the eye, and then move on. She just needs some more socializing, she's a bit of a biatch with other dogs, haha.

Yup! Lucy doesn't heal for beans on a leash (but I've never requested it of her--it's not important to me). Our walks are for her to sniff, to pee, to say hi to other people and dogs, to stalk squirrels...basically, to enjoy the world outside our apartment.

A 2 mile walk twice a day is never going to tire her out if we just walk it, so the point isn't exercise (well, maybe for me--but not her!). We walk through the park to maximize good smells and squirrel interactions.

Sam doesn't really like walks. He likes the idea of a walk but he doesn't actually like to walk....unless there is a person, dog or beach in sight. :p

ON leash..off leash great For Victor and PEpper is coming along on the latter nicely.. All of them. if dogs come up...we sit with cars no pull for cats or anything. We practice off leash once a day for one block. I treat it like their "duty" and they respond.

We dont do many walks on leash. 98% of walks on leash are done by me riding a bike beside him, so he has no choice but to keep with my pace and no stopping. or he gets yanked by the bike lol. we do about 10ish KM's a day (give or take a few KM's)

if we do do a leash walk, he sniffs worse the a beagle lol. His nose is to the ground 99% of the time.

Majority of his walking is done offleash (such as dog park, large field to play ball. Or the bike path with me riding and him at heel beside me, he wont leave my side to chase anything)

Abby is surprisingly easy to walk, but only under certain circumstances.

Sometimes she does pull a bit, but the BF doesn't mind that and he's the one walking her most of the time. Abby does not feel safe if anyone but the BF walks her and acts out by pulling or trying to back out of the leash.

When Abby encounters other dogs she used to snap and bark at other dogs, but now she allows them to sniff her. Gradually, she is overcoming some of her fears.

What's odd is that some dogs Abby really takes to like they were long lost buddies. Other dogs she immediately dislikes on sight.

The one thing we can't seem to do anything for her on is when she encounters a change in the side walk pattern. It throws her for a loop. For example, if the side walk changes from asphalt to brick, she sits down and refuses to move any further. It's like she can't convince herself that it's the same ground.

It's really, really strange.

Or, if she sees a storm drain in the street, it's like she thinks it's going to swallow her whole and she gets very upset if she has to walk near it.
