Hi, wondering if there are any general personality differences between females and males, or if it just depends on the individual dog.

Thanks!

I just have to say - I have all females, I usualt only get females as pets... However, there is one thing about Zoey being a girl that bothers me: Shes too picky to pee anywheres but at home in the LOOOOOOOONNNNNNGGGGG grass... Other than that, I can't see the difference it would make on having a female or male.

The gender really differs as to which breed you are talking about as well..

In Shelties - both male and female are supposed to be(if well bred) very friendly, active little dogs, obedient and natural herders..
however in males - they will mark(if unfixed), get excited easier etc.
in the females - they do have mood swings in their heat cycles, they can be more of a home body and they can be fairly picky to get to pee when you want them to go

in Belgians
males - territorial, male to male aggresion can be present, marking,
females - can be "bitchy", not as easily distracted

these are unaltered dog things I have noticed.

Being around a lot of dogs in rescue (mutts mostly :p), I haven't noticed much difference in male vs. female except that the females in general seem to be more picky about everything, playmates, people they like, etc. Males in general seem to be more happy go lucky. But it varies from dog to dog.

I agree.

With corgis:

Males: tend to be more goofy and happy go lucky, life's a game, everybody is your friend type thing. Are generally less job oriented and serious (if I want a performance dog, I'm going to look for a female).

Females: tend to be more dog-aggressive, are very bitchy, are very much divas. By diva I mean
is arrogant, difficult to work with, high-maintenance, fussy, high-strung, and/or demanding.

I know that with cats I prefer males. I like their size and their flexibility. I contend that if you have 20 cats in a room and only one of them is a female you can pick her out, and i don't mean by size either.

With dogs, the only dogs I ever had were males. I was set on getting a male until I saw Tosca the week she was born. There was just something about her that led me to her. At that point I didn't care what sex she was. I do know that with Collies, males can get bigger than females, so I am glad I got a female because he size is about right to me. Of course, all my animals have been spayed/neutered so I maybe don't have a good grasp on mood or behavior differences.

In dogs , cats or ferrets I hate to say this folks but IMO males are better. When fixed males seem to be more goofy and playful and females moody and bitchy. I swear that I will never own another female cat. All the ones I have owned I loved but never got the enjoyment from as I did the males. My poor Whiskey has to deal with 3 bitchy females hen pecking the crap out of him here. He wants to play they grump at him because they want to sleep . poor guy.

Yep. In GSDs the male is larger and generally more intimidating-looking due to just having a more masculine structure, and they are usually more territorial.

Females are smaller, generally more agile and typically more protective of their humans and can be jealous.

I prefer males to live with as a pet. You KNOW what's going to set them off...with bitches? WHO KNOWS?

I have enough hormones of my own...so I prefer to live with a male dog. Might also be why most of my close buds are male too, LOL.

With cats, males tend to be cuddlier and females tend to be more aloof and proud. My male cats are certainly cuddlier with each other!

Are female dogs really better with kids than male dogs? I've read that in several books and am wondering if it's true, or if the authors were projecting.
