Ok. So. Browsing CL last night I find an "urgent: dog needs saving" message. Of course I click on it and read it. The dog sounds great, so I made plans last night to go visit her at the shelter today. Great idea, right? Let's save this dog!
Well. She can not be with any other type of animals AT ALL. They need to post that information! On both the shelter website AND rescue website. So obviously, I can't pull her from the shelter and she's slated to be pts this week.
So I look at the other dogs and the shelter employee tells me that they have another dog that is extremely friendly. I ask about cats and she said we could introduce her to one. Great! Maybe a pup will get saved today anyways.
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. This pup has been there for a month, she is clearly very excited to be out of her cage. She is such a doll as well. As soon as she gets in the room, they bring the cat in. We don't even have time to greet her or play with her. Hmph!
And the woman bringing the cat in is RUDE. She is adement that this dog is clearly aggressive. Her body language is erratic and she is holding the cat in such a way that the dog has to strain to even get close to her to smell. The dog licks the cat and she screams, "NO!" Uhm... okay, wtf? And proceeds to tell us and the other shelter employee that dogs licking cats is sign of pure aggression.*biggest eyeroll ever* WTF. They put the cat down and the cat scampers away and the dog, duh, wants to chase it. Still on leash they let her get closer but the cat is too far away. The cat woman grabs the cat and takes it away and says the dog is too excited and needs to calm down (YES! good cat woman, *click* *treat*).
We play with her some, she is an amazing little dog! She has so much spunk and I pull out some treats and give her some. I put my hand around her mouth, play with her with a toy, take the toy away (I was very careful with this, I would go into detail but this isn't as important as the other stuff ). So, I ask how she is with all dogs, meaning, intact, spayed, neutered and ask for them to bring in an intact female. The shelter employee goes to get a dog and comes back and says we can't have the dog because it's aggressive. WTF. *sigh*
I ask for another opportunity with another cat. She goes to ask. The same cat lady comes back with another cat with another shelther employee. So now there are five people in the room. This additional shelter employee takes the leash out of hubby's hands and they introduce her to the second cat. Again, the cat lady is erratic and yells at the dog and has such rigid body language that *I* would have steered clear of her as well. The other lady holding the dog says, she probably wouldn't bite her onpurpose but may accidentally bit her and that is freakin' it.
What. The. ****.
I am there slack jawed. No joke. I could not believe it. Clearly they do not have the animals best interest and have no idea what they are doing. Hubby had the dog calm and sitting on the leash when they all came into the room adn as soon as she was handed to another person, she got overly excited.
We are writing a formal letter of complaint about our experience (this is not the first time we have "dealt" with this shelter) and are asking to adopt her. So friggin ridiculous. Poor dogs.
p.s. I apologize for typos, but I'm not going back to fix them.
