hey guys, weve been ask my a close friend, that when his pit bull, lasy, comes into heat, can we breed tyson and lasy. i have no clue what to say- my mom said it was up to me- that tyson was my dog. just to say, yes it will be a while if i do agree. and if i do agree what age does the bitch need to be bred? whats the YOUNGEST age that she can be bred with tyson. i am confused. my mom and dad after they got married, they raised, and bred german shepherd dogs. and so yes, my dad expecially knows what to look for and all. im probably gonna say no, but what is yalls opinions? i would like to have more dogs, but really, its just bringing more puppies into the world that may/may not find a home...

You just answered your own questions right there. I love the pitties, but there are SO MANY pit bulls around right now that breeding more would just add to the overpopulation problem. Your pups could end up in the fighting ring or in the shelter and you sound like a caring owner who wouldn't want that at all! My advice to you is to tell your friend no, and maybe try to educate them on why you have made your decision. You can also go to http://www.pbrc.net for more info on this subject.

I'd personally say no. Has the bitch and your dog been health tested? And I Don't mean have they gone to the vet,... have their hips been checked? Her elbows? Are they clear? If they aren't clear you really don't want to continue the ongoing trend of passing dysplasia down to a litter of pups. It is one of the hardest things to watch your once active dogs get slowed down at a pretty young age because they are dysplastic in their hips and knees. :(

There are other health issues to look at as well - hereditary cataracts, and congenital heart disease. So having the eyes and heart checekd for those things would also need to be done to ensure that you are bringing the healthiest pups into this world. And all those tests cost a pretty penny... I don't know the exact costs but I do believe they should be done.

Reason being that there are SO many pit bulls being thrown together either on purpose or by accident, that the breed's designation of being a "healthy breed" is being killed by conditions that are passed on strictly by genetics. Hip Dysplasia, cataracts, and heart disease are generally genetic diseases - too many recessive genes getting together and havnig a wild party at the expense of a future dog's health. It's pretty sad.

As for ages - I believe both Bitch and Dog should be at least 2, especially in the pit bull breed, so as to be fully developed physically. In that time you can have the health tests I mentioned ran, plus you can suss out what their true temperments will be as adults - although pitbulls do not fully mature emotionally until about 3years old.

I'd defiantely say no.

If you say yes and a few factors aren't there, then you will be contributing to the BackYard Breeders.

Also - pitbulls now adays are hard to place in loving forever homes because of the breed ban/law. Now sure about your state though.

IF both dogs are AKC registered, bother dogs are Tested for eyes, hips and elbows, If both haves have been shown or titled in some way, If both dogs compliment each other, If both haves adhear to the AKC breed standards.
THEN yes - you "could" breed.

If you answered no to any of those - then do not breed them.

I can walk into any shelter in this area and find at least 10-15 pitt mixes in each shelter. I'm sure I could find you at least 100 pitts or pitt mixes to chose from in less than a 50 mile radius from my home, and I don't live within 5o miles of any major city. If you really want more dogs, I can get you some very easily, I suspect you could get some very easily as well.

I think you already answered your own question, why bring more puppies into a world already overflowing with pitt, and pitt mix puppies with no homes already??? Unless you yourself plan to take on 5-10+ puppies and raise them till death yourself? I know that type of responsibility would send me to an early grave.

i can not agree any more! i said no to soem questions and yes to others.
yes, i wish i could have more dogs, but people have to look- you have to buy there I.D, collar, leash, food, food bowls, water bowls, vet checked, you have to put time in with them, and thats alot! expecially when you have 5 or more dogs. people would probably think youre rich to have all them dogs and if you do all that stuff. there likes kids! you have to buy food for your family- toys for them- you have to teach them right from wrong- and all that stuff.

so yes, i am going to say no, unless something comes up and we get everything done!if so, i will let yall know! but right now, i am sticking with no.
i can leave go to the shelter and find at least 1 full blood pit and 5 mixes. we were thinking about adopting a pit bull/labador retriever mix cause he was very sweet, and he had only 5 hrs left to find a good home. but someone adopted him before the money was collected.:(

Not to be rude, seriously, but there is no way on earth "that something will come up and we get everything done." Showing alone takes quite some time.

I really hope that you do say a very final No to this question and maybe even go a step further to spay/neuter your dogs. As you said yourself, there are a ton of dogs in the shelter, and if you (or the other people) are wanting a puppy, they know where to go look.

No. Kelsey I hate to say this, but really you should wait a long time if you ever decide to breed. It costs A LOT of money that most 13 year old dont have. I don't know exactly where you got Tyson from, but are you planning on showing him? Is he show quality?

Just look at this thread and you can see what is involved in breeding and how much it costs

Then that should answer your question about breeding right there. Did you ever say how old he was?

Not just a vet check

You need special x-rays done on his hips/elbows

Were did you get him?
Are his parent's titled?
You should never breed a non titled dog
Does he conform to the standard?

mach1girl accidentally bred her pit with no health screenings and she had alot of problems! and now has 3 puppies!
her puppies are gorgeous but they were bred without health screening, i'm sure she'd be happy to tell you of the risks and her personal experiences

sorry mach1girl i hope you dont mind me using you as a example its just its more likely to sink in when they here it from someone with first hand experience and especially when its the same breed.

Did anyone ever hear how old Tyson and Lady were? or if they were titled? OFA/CERF cert? etc. etc. :)
