So in 2013, I was pregnant with my daughter so we were looking to move into a 3 bedroom house/townhouse/apartment - anything really... and applied all over the city to live in these houses. A few of them sounded promising, and I'd never had trouble with renting in the past. My first apartment I applied for and got, second apartment we applied for - we also got, and the 3rd apartment was a transfer but that is something you have to also apply for and yes - we got it. But when we went to apply for townhouses, every single one declined us.

Now we're here again, rent is going up to over $1000, I live in a shitty neighborhood (since moving here there has been... 2 stabbings, 1 body found in the river I look out on, 1 crime scene investigation with a forensics team where the cops were digging up the woods I look out on, and MANY countless episodes of domestic violence resulting in police flooding our building....) this place, while larger than most apartments, just is not worth paying over $1000 for. Especially when we can rent a townhouse for $200 or so LESS each month.

We're looking at a townhouse today and really hoping to get it. It has a garage, a backyard, a rec-room for the kids toys, a laundry room (YAY laundry in my house!), 3 bedrooms, and is 20qs ft larger than our apartment. I'm just really nervous that what happened in 2013 will happen all over again....

We're in a better position financially though... so here's hoping!! I'm also worried they'll decline us because of the animals, but in Ontario I guess they're not allowed to do that?? but of course they still do... and this complex has so many people with pets.. my friend lives there and she has a dog and a cat and says that pretty much everybody has dogs.

I just need lots of luck wishes please!! :D

So we officially saw the place today and while the bedrooms are small, we're going to have to just make it work. I really can't be picky because at the end of the day it's still a step up from an apartment and it's still bigger than we're going to find as far as townhouses go.

The *only* thing that I could see being annoying there is that it is a complex located near train tracks.. and by 'near' I mean literally the side of the complex has a fence and then tracks... but at least there's a fence.

Our unit has tree's in the backyard which is SO nice, and the patio is pretty long which is also super nice! It's open, but that's not an issue, we'll just have to get a tie-out for Toby when he wants out, and will have to set boundaries with the kids. But a plus is that my living room looks out onto the patio area so even if the kids are back there I can still see them. (Though my daughter will never be back there alone, she's only 1)

Our paperwork has been started and we're paying our deposit tomorrow. I really, really hope things work out for us!!

Thanks everyone for all the well wishes, keep your fingers crossed!!

Congrats! Here's hoping everything works out smoothly :)

My current apartment is like that with the train tracks and I actually find the train noises soothing. I think the insulation is pretty stellar here though, so here's hoping yours is too! The only time I get annoyed at living this close to the tracks is when I get stuck at a crossing and it makes me late for work :p The amtrak trains go by fast but the cargo ones drag on and on forever.

Sounds like a great place!
Train tracks aren't so bad, did they say how often and how fast the trains go by?
Over the summer I lived in Hamilton right close to some tracks but the trains only went by in the dead of night and at like 40kmh max, so we never really noticed them.
But even when I dated a guy that had tracks right in his backyard - which made the house shake, it was pretty easy to get used to.

Keeping fingers crossed. I really hope it works out for you!

Yea my friend would be our neighbor if we get this townhouse and she basically said they just feel the house shake and then it's done.

I guess there are only 2 trains that go through there, 1 at 2pm and the other around 7pm, from the sounds of it they're always cargo trains, but that's fine.

I woke up an hour ago because I am just so anxious about the house. I can't even sleep and I bet this anxiety will last until we're moved in and settled... I always get "weird" when we're moving. I guess my "crazy" is to the point now that my hubby knows to pre-budget everything because he's marked it all out on a spreadsheet to show me what our expenses will look like :lol-sign:.

I think I'd rather have a train go by than be in a flight corridor with jets taking off overhead. Just sayin'... :) If you're putting down a deposit, is it a done deal? Still crossing fingers and toes for you!

No the deposit is just to hold the unit for us while our application goes through. If we are approved, the deposit is held as last months rent, and if the application is declined, we get the money back.

The CSR at the unit says that she doesn't see why we'd have any trouble obtaining the unit though so hopefully she's right!

Good luck! And if you don't get it for some odd reason, check out Berkshire. It's been about 20 years since we lived there but it was pretty nice then.

Is that in White Oaks? I am horribly traumatized by that end of the city and have an anxiety attack every time we go there, so if it is my anxiety would probably make it too difficult for me to live there.

I was raised in the White Oaks area but moved across the city in 2012 to get away from it.

No, it's close to Springbank/Wonderland, really nice area. Rental comes with a health club membership (indoor/outdoor pool!). Not sure what the prices are like, but wasn't bad 20 years ago.

I am going CRAZY. I am so antsy, I just want them to call us and tell us if we got the place or not, I feel like I have ants in my pants. I want to call the complex manager and ask if she's heard anything at all but I know she probably hasn't and that I'm just being a nut-head.

I also really, desperately want to start packing, and have already started going through my daughters toys and whatnot to get rid of a bunch of stuff so we have a good amount of space in the new place.

I know for sure we'll be getting rid of a TV stand... I'd like to get rid of more though o_O just purge like crazy.
