I met one of these today and it really seemed like a great dog. Kind of surprising to me because I really didn't care for the English springers I've met. Anyone know the ins and outs of the two breeds?

I'm not sure I'd ever get one but it seemed like a really cool dog and a perfect size.

In other news, a friend of mine in England just got a kooikerhondje puppy and I'm totally jealous. I'm starting to really have a gundog thing lately.

I don't know much on the Welsh Springer Spaniels. I think the only spaniel breed I'm most familiar with are Brittany spaniels, but that's because I had one when I was a kid. kooikerhondjes are freaking gorgeous though... that's one dog I've nudged Josh about since I know he's considering getting himself a dog and I know he loves hunting.

I'm a big springer person in general. I haven't met too many Welsh ones to be knowledgable about the differences, but an english springer is high on my list of wants.

I looked into the English Springers for a while and even talked to a woman about a litter she was having next year. Honestly, it's seems really really hard to find a good one and stable lines. We had one awesome one at the daycare that I worked at and the rest were just messes.

There is one breeder right now that I would say definitely yes to one of their puppies, but a lot of them are not stable.
The best Springer in the whole world is Buzz. It's a known fact :p

Well Taz is full of win ... and energy :lol-sign: Even my dad likes him (sometimes...)!!I think Taz crawling onto his chest when he felt sick and then barfing on him really cemented that bond. And that shows how awesome he is :p

Someone at our club has Welsh Springers but can't tell you a lot of specifics on them. I think it is probably easier to find a nice, moderate Welsh than it is a ESS. Here is an article about the differences between them:

Welsh / English Springer Spaniels: A Tale of Two Springers

A friend of mine got a Brittany last year and he's a pretty cool dog all around. Friendly, good with other dogs, drivey and biddable. After knowing him, I find it somewhat surprising that they aren't a more popular breed with pet and performance people.

Some of the Brittany's I've known have been extremely high energy, probably too much for the average pet owner. And smart, too. I'm not sure why they aren't more popular in dog sports.

I've known a lot of ESSs, a few with nervvy, BYB temperaments, but mostly really cool dogs.

I love Welshies. They are one of the most beautiful breeds in my opinion. I have met a bunch of them at shows. As much as I love them, they just don't fit. The welsh I have met kind of have a "nervous energy". They seem to be kind of shy. I think they would rather hunt all day than to go to dog shows. Plus my Papillon, River, doesn't like them. LOL Maybe one day though.

I decided on the English Cocker. They seem less "jittery" and more easy going. They come in red like the welsh and many other colors as well.
