My dog Andrew needs to lose weight. Currently he gets canned food twice a day and access to dry food 24/7. Since he always has access to dry food, could we give him less canned food without him suffering from a lack of nutrients?

Yes, that would probably be the easiest way. How much does he usually eat of the dry every day? If he eats a good amount, maybe you could just offer out a certain amount a day and if he finishes it, he doesn't get anymore. (But if he doesn't eat that much, I would just cut back on the canned).

Actually canned food would be more conductive to weightloss than dry food, since it contains more moisture and makes the dog feel full quicker.

Assess the amount of calories you are feeding per day. I recommend reducing the dry food until you reach an amount of calories appropriate for the dog's ideal weight.
