Does anyone who was fairly recently married remember about how much you paid for your wedding cake?

I need a "ballpark" estimate for a cake for about 50 people so that I can figure out if the packages that includes the cake are a better deal or not....

Thanks!!:D

Too long ago for your needs (13 years come Monday), but make sure you factor in the cost of getting the cake from the bakers to the reception site (will the bakery deliver? How much is the charge?)

We weighed that stuff and ended up just getting the cake with the reception package. The caterer used a local bakery that we liked anyway, so that worked out really well for us. Of course, the rate was only something like 20 bucks a head when all was said and done. We had a buffet but it was really high quality food (lots of beef, chicken and seafood - great philly italian caterer) plus a 5 hour open bar.

See also if they offer services to wrap up the top for freezing (so you can eat it together on your first anniversary). One less thing to worry about.

This summer, $400, for a 3 tiered cake that feeds 100 and a small 2-tiered chocolate groom's cake. It was $400 with or without the groom's cake....that was thrown in if we wanted it.

I want to say around $250-300 about 3 years ago but she also threw in a free grooms cake and was our caterer too. We paid for our own wedding and were on a tight budget. Something to keep in mind though, if you plan to do the traditional eat the top layer on your first wedding anniversary, find out about making a smaller one now to feed the people at your wedding and having them make an even smaller one in a year for you to eat then. After a year in the freezer...it just wasn't the same. Ours was for about 50-75 people. It also had hand made flowers on it. The grooms just had dipped strawberries.

$300 about two months ago that fed 300. It was 5 layers IIRC and each layer had it's own filling. And the cake was awesome. Honestly, it was one of the best I've ever had.

Ohhh.. all of you are making me feel a LOT better. THANK YOU ! I am stressed out and having to decide between 2 or 3 wedding places within the next week or two because we have to have a June wedding (my stepson is in the navy and will only be home for a small window of time, and so it means JUNE is likely our only option). EVERYTHING is booked already and we must make a decision soon and put a hold on a place. Some places include the cake and others don’t. My aunt might make our cake, but I can’t count on her since she will be living in another state by June. I can’t even ask her because we haven’t made our announcements to our families yet. We are having a special "engagement announcement event" in 4 weeks when the stepson is back for a short period of time. But we may have to decide on the when and where before that

A $300-$400 cake price makes the places where we have to provide our own a good deal still. I really appreciate all of your input and your suggestions on the top layer and transportation of it! :D

I like a nice simple main cake and then sheets for the guests ...... Really , after the food and drink who cares what their slice looks like . My niece's cake was covered with what looked like fresh flowers but was all icing ....must have cost them over $1000 and why ???? You could ever have a 4 layer cake with the bottom 3 tiers iced hat boxes !! Obviously I'm not in favor of expensive weddings !!!

do you know anyone who bakes cakes near you? maybe even a friend of a friend. we used a lady that my parents knew, and she was really cheap compared to what commercial bakeries had quoted.

plus her cake was really delicious! i have seen some of those really fancy cakes that tasted like dried out ass.

No dried out ass cakes please!:p :lol-sign:

My aunt makes the most incredible cakes. For her dtrs wedding a year ago she had 150 guests and she made 6 different tiers, all with different cake and filling flavors. All the levels had the most beautiful flowers on them including black calla lilies and green orchids. I REALLY want her to make my cake and she would love to, but with her moving out of state before we get married, she might not be able to so I have to have a backup plan. I really want her to do both my cake and flowers though… :D

I hear ya! No one REALLY cares that much about the cake, so why pay that kind of money.
where i am not willing to skimp on are things that to me matter. I don't need a an expensive cake or wedding gown that costs more than a couple hundred tops, but I WOULD like to splurge on making the location memorable for my family (we are thinking of doing it on an old sailing ship actually). The variety of food choices to suit my families tatses and the quality of the meal DOES matter to me though and is worth putting most of the funds toward those things, but NOT the cake!

Gina, thanks for the samsclub suggestion.. but I am pretty sure I can afford a little better cake than that...LMAO! :D

We got married in July and wanted a cake we really love so it was a Chocolate Mouse Fudge Cake. We only had 15 people at the wedding; it cost me $35 plus the wedding top. Here's a pic:

Something that you will definatley NOT want to scrimp on is your photographer. And I would suggest that you tell them in advance people that you really want them to make sure they get a pic of you and hubby with. This is how you will remember a lot of the day most likely. I would also have a friend or two who will take yet more pictures b/c you will be dying to see them and it can take a month to get the ones from your photographer back....plus then you may have some of other people you wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

I didn't want a bunch of posed stuffy pics so we took them of the wedding party and with our parents and then got candids throughout the rest of the day. I wish I had requested a few certain candids b/c I got all the pics I wanted with my parents that weren't posed but DH never even thought to ask for a picture with his while he was making the rounds but luckily my dad and his friend got them for us with their camera.

Something else to inquire about with a photographer is if you can get the rights to all the images and have them put on a CD. This is what we did and I am so glad b/c it means I could print as many as I wanted and share them with anyone.

2 years ago my friend paid $150 for my three tiered wedding cake. It only needed to feed 90 and we got to save the top tier for our 1st anniversary. :D

Sarah... I actually am likely going to have a fantastic photographer… :D someone that you and I both know from "across the pond" and has offered to do it gratis if her travel expenses are picked up. She also offers friends the photos on CD, so I am thrilled. I really wanted my photographer to be someone we knew. We were going to have one of our friends do it, but she is also in my fiancé’s a-capella group and we really want them to perform, so using her is out.
