Me and my friend both want this answered, and were wondering if you would help us out! Sorry if I seem a bit dull, being in vet school and all...

I am...
I am in my second last year of veternarian school, and am gone from 7AM - 2:30 PM. I'm very active and like walks, but I don't like running too much. I want a dog that can sleep on my bed and is easy to train and willing to please because I will not have enough time to train a stubborn dog, and I want a medium sized dog.

One of my friends recomended a Corgi or a Jack Russel Terrier, but I need a second opinion.

My friend is...
In his second last year of marine biology school, and he is gone from 7AM - 2:30 PM. He would rather be relaxing in his yoga room then doing anything physical, and is very lazy when it comes to training. He has a clumsy tendancy to step on smaller dogs (as seen with his brothers chihauhau poodle mix).

Thank you!

I second a shelter dog or a rescue... and an adult. Raising a puppy takes a lot of time and energy. A Corgi may be a smaller breed, but they are very, very active and very intelligent and do want to please. You have to be able to keep their minds and bodies challenged or they can create their own challenges, and humans often don't appreciate what the dog appreciates. Same thing goes for the JRT, except, IME, JRT's don't necessarily care if they please you. They are terriers, and most terriers I've met definitely have a mind of their own. Smart? Yes. Willing to please? You? Not so much. :D

Neither of you really have the time to raise a puppy so I suggest getting a young adult (7 months and older) from a shelter or breed specific rescue.

A Jack Russell would not be good for either of you! It is an extremely active working terrier. It needs to have a job, preferably on a farm.

Where in Canada? There might be someone here that could help both of you!

Well, Pomeranians are very intelligant and easy to train. But every dog needs attention and love, so you HAVE to have time for that if you want a dog. Collies are very smart too. Tell us what dog you have decided on soon!!
