I just got home a little while ago from the vet with Abby. She became noticeably swollen this afternoon so I brought her in asap. The vet at first thought it was a snake bite because of the puffy sagging skin on her neck, but couldn't find a puncture wound and thought it could also be a wasp sting. He suspected she was stung over her eye since she had quite a bit of swelling and her skin was turning red there. Anyways, she is much better now (still puffy, but it's gone way down) and they sent us home with some prednisone. While we were waiting to pay a woman there told me she keeps benedryl on hand for situations like this. I was juggling my daughter and my dog at the same time so I didn't ask, but would I want regular strength or children's benedryl? What dosage would be appropriate for a 42 pound dog? Or a 60ish pound dog in case the other one gets bit?

I keep killing those stupid wasps and we've had an exterminator out but they just keep showing up. I just want to make sure I've got the proper medication on hand if it happens again.

Thanks! :)

I'm glad Abby is okay. Yes, I keep Benedryl on hand all the time for stings.

You give the regular adult pill. 25 mg for each 1 lb of body weight.

For my 49 lb dog, I give 2 tablets.

I keep it around for us as well as the dogs. Benedryl works wonders for wasp stings, ant bites, rashes, allergic reactions in the monsters.
