Ok, my dog had bad skin allergies well we have hypo shampoos and hot oil stuff *not really hot, just to make skin soft*. Well my mom wants to wash the dog like once a week in this stuff, is that right? i was told by groomers and vets not to wash no more than once every 3 weeks or longer. Is washing him once a week causing more dry skin?

Washing a dog too often WILL cause the skin to be dry, and flaky. I would never wash a dog more than ONCE a month! And I personally only wash my dogs once every 4-6 months unless they get really dirty (Roll in mud, or poop, or whatnot) and need a bath sooner. And they have beautiful, shiny, soft, unflaky fur. So I would never do it more than once a month.

If you get good, quality shampoo and a good diet it should not dry out the skin/coat too much.

Show dogs are often washed weekly or even multiple times on a weekend depending on breed and those dogs have some of the nicest coats you'll ever see on a dog.

Summer gets bathed usually 1-2 times a month. At home, the paps sometimes get bathed weekly. Trey usually just needs one bath a month.

A lot of allergies seem to me to be related to diet. What's he eating?

I have to agree^^^^! As long as you are using a high quality DOG shampoo a weekly bath will not hurt your dog. What kind of hot oil treatments are you thinking of using? Equis shampoo has a nice dog shampoo formulated especially for itchy skin that works nicely. It takes away the itch so that the dog is not biting and scratching causing more damage and inflamation to the already bad skin.

What is causing the allergies?
