I am worried about having to leave it for 7 hours a day for work...any ideas? I am not really able to come home more than maybe one time a day for lunch and even then only for 15 minutes...is it hopeless?

Not hopeless! But I would recommend an adult, not a puppy. Puppies can't hold it that long. Plus, puppies are labor intensive! :yikes: I always recommend an adult, or even young adult, to anyone who works.

What kind are you looking for?

You can litter train small dogs, too. My mother in law has a MaltiPoo who is litter trained. He goes out, but for long days, he always has his litter box.

Yorkies are cute!

Hmmm, I see no problems with that, except at the very beginning. You could ask the breeder if they'd hang on to the pup until it was a bit older, and can "hold it" longer by the time it gets to your home. If they are a reputable breeder, they should have no problems with doing that. ;)

I got Tysa when she was 5 weeks old (I know, terrible, and at the time I didn't know any better, plus I was told she was actually 6 1/2 weeks, but the dates on her health record for birth said 5 weeks). Anyway, my bf at the time and I were both on the same shift, so Tysa was left for 8 1/2 hours a day during the week by the time she was 10 weeks old. Luckily I got her just as I'd started my vacation time at work, and my bf had been at the company longer, so he got an extra 2 weeks.
She had accidents here and there in her crate for maybe the first month being left alone, but she was fine. I worked hard on training her whenever I was home, and she was just under 4 months before she starting being consistant in not having any accidents at all in the house, during the day or overnight.

To be honest, most people have to leave their dogs for a somewhat long period during the day, and the only time you really need to worry is when they are young and still potty training. I think if you had the breeder keep the pup till 10-12 weeks, with you being able to get home at lunch, even over a 15 minute period he/she will likely "go" during that time. Or if you can take some vacation time when you first bring the pup home, that'd work too. As long as you have patience, and understand that there can and will be accidents at first, you'll be fine.

chrwel, I see no problem with you getting a puppy, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not support pet stores, puppy mills or backyard breeders.

You will be way happier with your little bundle of joy if you get from a responsible breeder. If you need help finding one there are tons of people on here that would be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

OR

You could rescue an adult, either from a shelter or a rescue. That way, you may get a dog that is already house trained and older. Plus there are tons of Yorkies and Yorkie crosses that need homes.

Good luck with your search

Thank you all for your responses:) It makes me feel alot better. My husband and I are very committed to making sure when we are home that the puppy is taken out every few hours...and we are going to go through a breeder that our friend just went through. They did alot of research and this is a very responsible breeder thats been doing this for over 30 years. :) Thanks again for your help!

A Yorkie shouldn't be leaving the litterl prior to 10-12 weeks anyway.

Would you also consider looking into doggie daycare?

some reputable breeders also sell off some of their older purebred dogs. you could look around for a mature yorkie maybe.
