How long does it take for a dog to digest its food? Seven hours after eating, my dog vomited quite a bit and much of it was whole kibble. That seems odd to me.

Is this a new type of kibble? My pit cant eat kibble without throwing up. He ate kibble for the first year and a half of his life before I got him. He then went on a raw diet and now he cant keep kibble (that he steals from neighbors and friends homes) down. He also will hold it in for several hours and it looks just like it did when it went in.

There are a lot of folks that know a whole lot more than I do about dogs but I think they suggest breaking into a new diet slowly. Maybe even mixing a little old with a little new and smaller amounts at first. I found it odd that when Hank eats kibble then throws it up later it looks undigested. Its almost like they have a storage compartment in there.

Yes, Buck is right...........especially since you've seen first hand that it isn't agreeing with him all at once.

If this is a food you want to continue giving a chance and maybe stick with, I'd mix the new food slowly in with his old food. 25% new to 75% old, then slowly move the ratio to 50/50..........75/25........and finally 100% new. Which probably means buying another bag of his OLD food, but it's better than the alternative, LOL

Imagine a toddler's tummy. Say he's only eaten strained green beans for the last year, then BOOM, mom feeds him a blendered up bean burrito or something! The results probably aren't going to be pretty! :lol-sign:

I know all about introducing new foods slowly, but unfortunately this wasn't an option. Corky is a foster dog and has been eating "whatever" food has been donated until he landed in our home. The food he arrived with, yet another new brand, resulted in him breaking out in weeping sores and within a week he had a secondary infection. We had to change him fast. My curiosity was about how long food takes to digest and if I should be concerned that, many hours later, he had whole food in his belly.

Did you just bring him home? Which food caused him to break out? Does he have allergies? What are you feeding now? Sorry, just trying to understand better :)

Kibble usually takes at least 10-12 hours to digest completely, so I don't think that part is a huuge cause for concern. Of course, if it continues, consult with your vet.

Since he's had an infection, I imagine he's been on antibiotics? That'll kill off the good bacteria as well as the bad, so you may want to try adding in a probiotic to help him out a little bit.

Did you just bring him home?
We've had him just about a month now.

Which food caused him to break out?
Summit - Canadian Chicken

We think he may have allergies. He was also treated for possible demodetic mange with Advantage, in case the flare up was from that and not an allergy.

What are you feeding now?
About a week into having him on Summit and realizing there was a problem, I put him onto Natural Balance - Duck and Potato which he did very well on. Unfortunately its not a brand that is available at the store that supplies the rescue so they chose to put him onto Acana Pacifica grain-free food. We do hope to adopt Corky ourselves and we may switch him -- slowly -- back to Natural Balance if he has any more episodes of stomach upset.

Kibble usually takes at least 10-12 hours to digest completely, so I don't think that part is a huge cause for concern.
Good to know.

He was on antibiotics for two weeks so a probiotic would be a good idea.

Thanks!
