For those that don't know Phoebe is my aunt and uncle's dog. They live in an apartment attached to our house. After Max died and before we got Tucker Phoebe was my substitute dog and I brought her over and trained her nearly every day. She wasn't big on affection and didn't have much energy for going out and doing things but that dog LOVES training and is super smart and fun to train. So even though she's not mine she holds a special place in my heart.

My uncle came home on Monday and found Phoebe in pain. She didn't want to walk more than a few steps without sitting down and was walking a little weird with her back legs. She was shaking and clenching her stomach. Initially uncle thought she had hurt a leg, I was worried about her stomach because it was hard as a rock and she didn't like when we pressed on it. He was going to run her into the vet but she peed and pooped so he figured if it was an emergency type thing she wouldn't be able to do that. But then yesterday he came home and found her even worse, she barely wanted to walk at all and was shaking like a leaf. So off to the vet they went.

They did X-rays but the vet said they didn't tell him much. Nothings broken, nothing obvious internally. He said his gut feeling is that she has slipped a disc in her back. He gave her a pain injection and gave them pain pills and anti-inflammatory meds. She needs to be on crate rest for three weeks. After 3 weeks they will have to make a decision based on how her pain is.

Phoebe could really use some good thoughts and vibes. Nobody was expecting this. Also does anyone know anything about slipped discs in dogs? What are the chances she'll recover at all from this?

Daisy was diagnosed with intervertebral disc disease a few years back (other vets have said they're not exactly sure that's an appropriate diagnosis so I suppose a slipped disc could have been possible as well), and her symptoms were much the same. She had two weeks of strict confinement (crate rest, and occasionally I'd lift her up to sit on the couch with me), plus pain meds, NSAIDs and muscle relaxers. Like I said, it was a few years ago and she's had one episode since. How big is Phoebe? The biggest thing for us is making sure she doesn't go up/down stairs or jump on/off furniture by herself. We let her walk up the stairs once at night, and carry her down every morning. Good luck!

Certainly hope Phoebe gets better. Is she an old dog? Is she over weight? Animals are good at healing, so maybe with the rest and care she can get past this. It is much easier with a small dog to care for. Best to you and Phoebe.

Thanks everyone! So far she's doing alright, they say the pain meds are keeping her very comfortable but sort of out of it.

She is 10 years old and is overweight so I think just jumping off of the couch and bed has taken it's toll. She's never been the most athletic thing.
