So I've noticed recently that Lucy has been feeling thin, she had her teeth cleaned in January and was at a pretty perfect weight at that point. But now her spine is really prominent, her ribs not as much so but still more noticeable than they need to be. I mean for a sedentary dog she feels thinner than Juno & Cajun, who are both lean and active and mistaken for being starved.

There's been no change in her food or how much she's fed, however now that my cat lives in my bedroom, she no longer has access to his food bowl... and she used to get into the cat food ALL the time. For a small dog like her, a 1/4c of cat food on probably a daily basis is pretty significant, so I thought maybe she was just now needing an increase in her food now that she's missing out on those calories.

Today I happened to notice that her abdomen is really bloated. I don't know how long it's been like that. I shaved her last week and didn't notice it but maybe I was just being oblivious? I'm not an expert but it just feels fluid-y to me. =/
So I've got this thin dog with a relatively significant potbelly.

Obviously, she's coming to work with me on Monday. She seems to be normal otherwise so I don't feel like I need to rush her in somewhere. Vibes that it's not as bad as I'm thinking it could be?

Yeah I was thinking maybe I'd be ok with cushings lol. I don't know though. To the best of my ability I think I feel a fluid wave but I can't be certain since I haven't felt those a ton. Guess we'll just have to wait and see, she at least seems tk be feeling ok.

I'm right, there's significant fluid build up in her abdomen... blood work will be running in a sec, probably a belly tap at some point this afternoon.

Thanks guys. So blood work showed a really low albumin and total protein, so she's losing protein from somewhere... we just don't know where. The rest of the blood was looking normal and not really tipping off to anything. To start with something easy, ideally I would've gotten a urine sample and checked for any protein in it, but Lucy wasn't feeling like providing one today.

SO. To further assess her liver, we sent out a bile acids panel which should come back tomorrow. We're planning on doing an ultrasound as well, I called the radiologist and it looks like that'll be done either Thursday or Friday, just waiting for him to get back to me with what works best.

Otherwise we're a bit in limbo right now, my vet was reluctant to start any treatments without knowing the root of the problem in case the medication made the problem worse.

But essentially her protein level is dangerously low and I need to keep a close eye on her. =/
