So today I chose to bring my gerbil to the vet for her ear infection. I was going to leave it, she's old and I know it was a lot of money, but I just couldn't do that to her. I can't imagine allowing her to die from an ear infection, she's in enough pain already but then to allow it to spread, her to get a fever and slowly and painfully die. It's just not who I am, I don't care if she can't whine and cry from the pain, it's still cruel.

Anyway, I realized how close I came to allowing it and the reason was vet price. So anyone want to guess how much this will cost me? I just want to see what the general consensus is as far as prices, if you too think the prices are ridiculous. We also have to remember that they are charging us extra because they are "fitting us in", it's not a scheduled exam, they had no time. It should be a visit, exam and antibiotic injection plus the extra for fitting us in.

Well since they would be marked as a "exotic" pet. My guess would be 150 or more. our iguana cost us over 300 in bills in 2 short visits. crazy what they cost. But Im glad you wont let her suffer.

First off I'm sorry to hear your little gerbil is sick. I hope she recovers quickly!

As for the visit, hhuummm lets see........round here average vet visit runs around $35, then the "exotic animal" fee brings it up to about $45-$50, then the meds.....another $45, then the emergency "fit in" fee another $100.

My guess is around $150-$200

I had to bring a chinchilla into the emergency vet for an x-ray in the middle of the night... it turned out to only be a sprain and not a break, and they only charged me $80 for the x-ray and cortisone shot. They waived the $80 or so odd office visit fee which was surprising.

However, I'm guessing your vet visit was between $150-200 with everything. I spend $40 on a scheduled vet vist, so I'm guessing your visit was $75 because of them fitting you in.

Well being that I was just at the vet and it was $100, and I was like "hey, that's really cheap!" walking out... but not as in that's cheap, more as in that's by far the LEAST amount I have ever spent on a visit here.... I am going to say $150.

No answer yet, they told me to show up between 4-6 pm and they would grab me when they had time. So I will tell you when I get back, I just hope I have enough money, chances are if dad takes me he will pay for some of it regardless, if mom takes me she will pay for the amount that I don't have money for, either way I'm now going to be broke...I think I need a job.

we used to have two pet rats. So I am going to say in between $200 and $300. Very pricey since it is considered exotic.

no, no lol we have not gone yet, I sorta kinda know what the fee will be. I know how much it costs to bring in an animal, I know how much the "fitting in" will cost and from there I don't know but have my guesses, I just want to see what you all think it should be or will be, I'll tell you what it is when I get home. The lady did not mention anything about them boosting the price due to them being "exotic" but who knows, they have a staff member who specializes in small mammals. I still think it's a little ridiculous that a 15 minute or less visit with a 3 oz animal will cost the same or more than a 45 minute visit with an 65 pound dog. Oh well, I just hope it's actually an infection and I'm not going in for nothing. Oh and she's not a hamster...she's a gerbil (it's a pet peeve of mine lol). Wish us luck, we should be leaving soon.

Now some people say the gerbil will just get an injection, other people have been sent home with meds (I really hope they don't do that to us, her head is at such a tilt right now I don't know how I'd get drops in there without holding the poor girl upside down, plus they'd come right back out!).
