Hey Guys. Sorry I haven't been on in a while. Been in MO spending time w/ my dad and pulling long hours at work.

My youngest Angel has always been thin but now more and more people are saying rude things to me about it, especially my ex. Angel is a GSD/Golden mix. She was the runt of the litter. If you saw her (sorry never did figure how to post pics and my digital is down) you'd swear she hasn't been feed in weeks/months.

I feed her 2 cups of dry Canidee All life stages (just like I do my Golden and GSD). She is VERY active. When she's outside she just runs non-stop, part of the reason I can't get grass to grow - LOL.

So my question is I've had her tested at the vet before for worms, etc to see if she might have something that is keeping her from gaining weight. Her heart worm test has always come back negative. She didn't have anything show up in any of her tests at the vet last year. She even weights around 50 pounds and my other two are 60-70. I said something again to the vet in March when he fixed her because the vet techs were saying how they'd swear she was a starved dog and he said she looks good and that's how dogs are suppose to look. I didn't agree, I like my dogs to have a nice layer of fat.

I feed her 6 cups of food a day a couple of months back just to see if she'd gain and she didn't. I recently tried to bump her back to 4 cups of food a day and it just gives her the runs to increase her food. The vet had even suggested up to 10 cups of food a day if she'd gain, but she didn't at 6 and it was getting very expensive to feed her the additional food if it's not going to make a difference. I had her on the 6 cups of food for 2 months.

You can see every rib, hip and shoulder bone, etc. Even worse when you pet her you feel them. I've tried not letting her be very active but who knows what she does when I'm not home. I've even crated her during the day, etc.

How do I get her to gain weight? Could something be wrong with her? Should the vet run different tests? If yes, any ideas?

I'm just sick of people telling me I should put her down because of how she looks when she's healthy (as far as I know - no signs that she's not since she's always been this thin since she was delivered at my house). She's made it through a Pit Bull attack and the spinal surgeries that it took after the attack. She's happy, so I'm just lost and really need some advice/help.

I dont really have any advice for you but am curious to see what others suggest. I have a 10 month old GSD that you can see her ribs and hip bones, she feels awful when you pet her. But she is just SO hyper I cannot keep weight on her. She eats 8 cups of food a day, as well as canned and frozen biljac, vitamins, table scraps, and the food she is on is a high energy/ working dog food. and she is still skinny as ever. I feel bad but I dont take her no where because I get tired of the nasty looks and comments about wow that dog is really thin did you just rescue it.

Any 'rice' grains in the poo?

Checked the thyroid?

And I'm assuming ya'll did a fecal. You mentioned a HW test (which wouldn't have much bearing on weight problems other than the preventative killing hooks/rounds) but didn't mention whether a regular fecal was done.

My dog has been checked for everything under the sun and the vet can find nothing wrong. Says she is healthy, just hyper.

This is what I am feeding her. I have tried different foods with no results so I have been keeping her on this because of the high fat content. I swear this dog NEVER sleeps or lays down.

i'd try switching food. i was having the same problem with harvey. he'd eat twice the recommended amount of food, poop 8000 times a day, and not gain any weight.

i ended up switching him to the active breed formula of what verderben linked too, which is slightly less fat and slightly less kcal/cup. he eats a normal amount of food and produces a normal amount of poop and has gained weight. i don't know what it is about the eukanuba that suits his body. he didn't do nearly this well on the timberwolf that cost me three arms and a leg.

1.) Switch food. You want something HIGH in calories. Look into Innova, Timberwolf Organics or Orjien. Grain free foods usually contain the highest number of calories.

2.) Bump the feeding of the high calorie food (assuming you switch) up to at least 3 cups a day.

3.) Satin Balls. Great for putting weight on a dog. Shelters use satin balls to put weight on skinny rescues.

4.) Structured exercise to build muscle tone. Running around the backyard is not structured exercise. Daily walks are a great start. Try at least 30 minutes of controlled leash walking every day.

The shepherd type dogs are somethines HARD to put weight onto.. especially at a young age.

Its usually best that they are kept trim at a younger age to help keep their joints healthier as they grow into them.

My Belgian Terv was IMPOSSIBLE to put weight onto when he was younger.. usually when they hit the 2-3year mark they start gaining weight..

Riot is now 2yrs and hes FINALLY starting to look "healthy".

You need to put your dog back onto puppy food. There are more calories in the puppy food. I have found the only puppy food that has actually kept weight onto Riot would be the California Natural Lamb puppy formula.

You can also add in the Omega 3 fatty acid suppliment as well that will help with skin and coat nutrition.

You just need to switch foods to a higher calorie intake. Thats the only way your pup is going to gain and keep weight on.

As long as your dog has been cleared of any intestinal parasites... switch foods to a high calorie content.

Evo is the highest calorie food I have found (higher than any puppy food I have seen) and high in fat too. The satin balls are great. The other thing you can do, along with switching to a higher cal food, is to add oil to the meal. Oil/fat is the most calorie dense substance there is. I have a really hard time keeping weight on Zo. She does the best on the Evo, but when I feed orijen (which I also like) I have to double the oil I give her as the Evo is a fair bit higher in cals.

Nutrical is how i kept weight on Victor when i first got him. He was about 5 months old and refused to eat anything. It is a bit expensive, but a teaspoon goes along ways. Sold at most pet chains. it comes in a gel and you can run a line of it down your finger and adhere to the roof of a mouth of an animal too weak to swollow. I have brought quite a few around using this. For Victor i just measured out a spoonful and gave him daily doses until he simmered down some (that took months) and started to keep on weight.

Thanks Guys! I did run a fecal - I actually ran it on all my dogs. Came back clear. Poop is normal until I increase her food then she gets the runs.

I originally had all 3 on Iams then switched them to Canadee per the advice of this group. I'd rather have them all on the same food but I'll try anything at this point. My oldest GSD is over weight (long story - ex hubby had her for a month and free fed her) so I've been trying hard to get the extra weight off her.

My golden actually looks healthy but I think that's because of his hair. When you pet him you can feel his ribs also. I'm not really worried about him since he actually has some "meat" on his bones.

I'll call the vet to make another apt. and see if they can check her thyroid.

Angel is 3. So do you think Canidee isn't a good fit for her or keep her on that and fix her those satin balls?

These are ingredients I've never bought before - where can I find them?

Omega 3 fatty acid suppliment
wheat germ
unsulfured molasses

The oatmeal - it says box - it is just regular oatmeal?

Do you feed your dog only once a day? If so, that might be why you have problems when you increase the amount of food. I would try breaking up the food into two or three small meals per day. It would be easier on the tummy than trying to digest a giant mass of chow. For example, try feeding 2 cups of food twice a day.
